Mental Health, Maryland Man, COVID-19: The 2020 Stories We’ll Remember Writing

While the writers at The Chronicle of the Horse always aim to produce impactful stories, we sometimes have especially meaningful encounters as we try to do justice to a person’s struggle or triumph or partnership with our words. Here are a few of the stories we wrote in 2020 that made a lasting impression. “The Taboo Topic Of […]

When The Going Gets Tough, The Baby Horse Steps Up

There’s some stuff to catch you up on. Grab a glass of wine. OK. So the last time we chatted about my personal horsey life, I had just half drunkenly (sort of) purchased a lovely little 3.5-year-old hunter prospect off the interwebs, sight unseen. To make it happen both money and time-wise, I had also […]

Back From The Brink: Waldor Walks His Way To Wellness

They say not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but every equestrian knows you’d better look twice at its legs. Which is why Jesse Woodhead understood she’d need to proceed with caution when her mom, dressage trainer Marina Parris-Woodhead, told her about Waldor. “Waldor had sustained a high suspensory injury as a 7-year-old, […]

Blackfoot Mystery, the off-track Thoroughbred Boyd Martin rode at the 2016 Olympic Games (Brazil), has been purchased by Texas rider Amber Clark to compete at the lower levels. The 16-year-old gelding (Out Of Place—True Mystery, Proud Truth) was bred by John O’Meara in Kentucky and had three starts on the track. He began his eventing career with […]

Too Cheap To Compete?

In the recent Chronicle piece “Want To Do An International Hunter Derby? Get Ready To Pay An Enrollment Fee,” yet another controversial issue potentially impacting riders like me was discussed. The change, proposed for 2021, would require owners of all horses competing in a USHJA International Hunter Derby to pay an enrollment fee, even if […]

The Stables At Midnight: A Christmas Story

I have a true story to tell about midnight on Christmas. It happened in 1991 or ’92. My marriage had ended, and I was leasing a farm as a boarding stable. I had around 20 horses at Christmas that year. My son was then 5 or 6 years old and knew the Thomas Hardy poem about all the animals kneeling down at midnight on Christmas Eve. He begged and begged to go to the stable at midnight, but I put him off, not wanting to disappoint him in this year of so many disappointments.

Take The Photos

Our Holiday Pets section of The Chronicle of the Horse is one of my favorites because who doesn’t love a horse, dog, cat or child dressed up? It’s always a great mix of hilarious (please see the cat on p. 85) and stunning (see this issue’s cover) photos. But this year’s feature, especially the tribute […]
