Ross Martin, Boyd Martin’s father, passed away on Saturday night of the July 4 weekend after he sustained serious injuries in a cycling accident.
Ross was struck by a truck during a bicycle race near Newcastle, New South Wales, two weeks ago. According to Boyd’s blog, Boyd was able to visit his father before he died and remains in Australia with his family.
Ross was an Olympic athlete himself—he represented Australia in cross-country skiing in 1968 in Grenoble, France. He was an enthusiastic supporter of Boyd’s riding and the sport of eventing. Most recently he attended The Fork in Norwood, N.C., where Boyd won the advanced division with Remington XXV.
The news comes on the heels of a devastating barn fire at True Prospect Farm, which claimed the lives of six horses and destroyed all of Boyd’s equipment.
