Lifelong equestrian Margaret Cortright Kennedy Lockhart died on Dec. 18, 2006, of natural causes. She was 94.

As a teenager, Mrs. Lockhart, accompanied by her mother, spent summers in New England, traveling from show to show competing on a three-gaited saddle pony and an open jumper.

A staunch competitor, Mrs. Lockhart competed in the family class at the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair (Pa.) from 1948 until 1963, winning the class 10 times. When her children were growing up, her contemporaries regaled them with tales of their mother’s heroics, such as jumping out of a show ring at age 12 on an out-of-control Thoroughbred. Mrs. Lockhart returned to the show ring after her children grew up and competed in the amateur-owner hunter division.

After finally hanging up her tack at age 85, Mrs. Lockhart continued to support her daughters who showed and also followed the Cheshire Hunt (Pa.).

Walsh, Coatesville, Pa.; Betsy Kennedy, Lexington, S.C.; Leslie L. Ducharme, Christiana, Pa.; and Allyn Brown Lockhart, Coatesville, Pa.; and nine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to Linden Hall, 147 West State St., Kennett Square, PA 19348 or Jennersville Home Care & Hospice, 121 Bell Tower Ln., Oxford, PA 19363.
