Kentucky Broadcast Draws Bigger Numbers

Sunday’s NBC broadcast of the Rolex Kentucky CCI**** drew an overnight rating of 1.0, said Bob Hughes, who produced the program, this afternoon.

In 2005, the telecast garnered a .9 rating, and in the Olympic year of 2004 it drew a 1.4.

A rating of 1.0 means that 110,200,000 households viewed at least part of the show. Hughes said that means that between 2.5 and 5 million people watched more than one minute of it, about 20 percent more than in 2005.

By comparison, the poker championships that immediately preceded the Kentucky show (except on the West Coast) drew a 1.8, while the NHL playoff game between Colorado and Anaheim that immediately followed drew a .9. “It’s the first time equestrian has taken on one of the traditional big-four sports and had a clear win,” said Hughes with excitement. ”We can savor out little victories.”

Hughes will also produce NBC’s coverage of the World Equestrian Games, which will show on Sept. 24 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. (Horse-TV will be showing daily coverage of the WEG too.) NBC has a contract with Hughes to produce their coverage of Rolex Kentucky in 2007 and 2008.
