Just as he has every year since the four-star began at Rolex Kentucky in 1998, James C. Wofford, who won Kentucky in 1981 and 1986, evaluates the starters.

The last weekend of April is always the first thing I put on my schedule for the year. Rolex Kentucky is the largest equestrian event on the continent and is “can’t-miss” watching for fans of the sport.

This year the event is about to take a giant leap forward, as the final preparations for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games are put in place. Be prepared for these changes as soon as you drive into the gates of the Kentucky Horse Park.

The first thing you’ll notice is the new outdoor stadium. It now seats 7,500 with most of the seats under roof. Note that all of the seating in the grandstands will be reserved, so make sure you get your ticket orders filled early. The next thing you probably will notice is that the statue of Bruce Davidson and Eagle Lion has been moved to the stadium. If you are looking for a “photo-op,” this is the new best place.

In order to ease the traffic flow, parking is included in the ticket. I recommend an early arrival. There are going to be a large number of first-time visitors to the KHP, which means a lot of rubber-necking going on while you wait to enter the Park.

Everyone in the Park this year will be required to have a ticket or an admissions badge. (You know you are successful when, like the Super Bowl, you have to put bar codes on the tickets to prevent counterfeiting.) If you want more detailed information about the event, you can find it on the Rolex Kentucky website: www.rk3de.com.

Rolex Kentucky 2009 is the first “guinea pig” event for the 2010 WEG, and there is going to be a large foreign contingent here this weekend, checking out the facility. Eighteen months from now the World Championships in eight Fédération Equestre Internationale disciplines will be contested here at the KHP, and this will require enormous logistical efforts from all concerned. Coaches, chefs d’equipe and team managers from most of the equestrian powers will be here making their plans for the WEG.

In addition, many of the elite riders from around the world are bringing their best horses for a practice run over Michael Etherington-Smith’s cross-country course. (Mike E-S to his many friends.) The riders’ thinking is that while they want their horses to be familiar with the Park, they want to do it this year so as not to fly their horse across the pond or around the world twice next year.

From our point of view, this should provide the highest-quality field we have seen here in many years, and I can assure you that we will all be on the edge of our seats until the last horse jumps the last show jump.

This is the 12th year I’ve done this Rolex Preview, and I think it’s going to be the most exciting year to date. It will be hard for a U.S. rider to break into the top 10 this year, due to the strength of the overseas contingent.

While the winner will be decided over the last show jumping fence, there’s a great deal for the horses and riders to do before they even get to the show jumping.

The dressage rides should be impressive this year, what with four-star winners and Olympic and World Championship medalists competing here. The riders are just coming to grips with the new 2009 FEI four-star test. While it’s more difficult than the test we are accustomed to seeing in years past, the riders’ dressage is at such a high standard these days that some of them will produce impressive results.

It’s a difficult test and definitely not the sort of test where I would want to ride a fit horse; I think it will produce some decidedly “fizzy” tests. We will find out more about it this weekend. Look for scores in the low 30s to be in the lead after the first two days of competition.

While the start of the cross-country course is in the same location, the route has been reversed from years past and now proceeds counter-clockwise. Make sure you check the course map before starting out on your inspection tour of the course.

Mike E-S and the FEI technical delegate, Tom Ryckewaert, (this duo will also be the course designer and the TD for the 2010 WEG) want to produce the best possible footing on the galloping track. This means that while you are walking around to get an advance look at the jumps, please respect the ropes and stay outside the galloping lanes. Mike E-S told me recently that he didn’t mean for the course to be “a shade easier” this year; it “just turned out that way.” If you believe that, have I got a bridge for you! I can’t remember the last four-star course that I thought was easy.

Mike tries to build to the same level of difficulty every year, and this year will be no different. I do think that quite a few horses and riders will make the course look easy, but that says more about the standard of riding than it does about the difficulty of the course. I have noticed that if you jump into one of Mike E-S’s combinations and your pilot light goes out, you will think the course is hard enough.

Mike is purposely disguising his thinking for next year, and I promise the 2009 and 2010 Rolex courses will bear little similarity to the 2010 WEG course next fall. However, the permanent features are in place, and some of them are brand new.

The Head of the Lake has been totally revamped for the first time since the 1978 World Championships and will also be used by the combined driving championship participants. Some of the other permanent features are new and improved as well, including the Hollow and the Sunken Road.

Over the years, I’ve learned to temper my remarks so as to provide a kinder, gentler commentary. However, if you study my comments, you will find definite opinions hidden in my somewhat Delphic pronouncements.

On a personal level, one of the things I enjoy the most about writing this article, and the accompanying predictions, is how friendly some of the riders are with me all spring. I suppose they hope that by making nice they can preclude me telling the truth about them.

Stay tuned to see how that works out!

Late in the evening at a recent competitor’s party, one well known but over-cocktailed competitor divulged to me that, “I have no tattoos on my body that I know of!”

You can’t make this stuff up.

Vaunted: b. g., 16.1 hands, 11 years, U.S.-bred Thoroughbred (Two Punch—First Quad), owned by rider.
Ashley Adams: age 23, Southern Pines, N.C.
In 2007, they completed the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.), and last year they placed 16th there. Also in 2008, they placed ninth at the Jersey Fresh CCI*** (N.J.), and in advanced horse trials they finished second at Southern Pines (N.C.) and Poplar Place (Ga.), fifth at Five Points (N.C.) and eighth at Rocking Horse (Fla.). This spring, they were fourth at intermediate at Pine Top (Ga.) and placed sixth and second and 17th in advanced divisions at Pine Top, Southern Pines and The Fork (N.C.), respectively.

Ashley and Vaunted have not had a trouble-free preparation, but they are up to the challenge and at their best can produce a steady clear round. I have watched this pair at several competitions this year. As Walt Wilkins sings, “I’ve got big, big hopes about you.”

Dobbin: ch. g., 16 hands, 14 years, U.S.-bred Thoroughbred (Lyphilius—Deal Debbie Deal), owned by rider.
Corinne Ashton: age 47, Princeton, Mass.
In 2007, they won the advanced division of the American Eventing Championships (Ill.) and placed ninth at the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.). Last year, they completed Rolex Kentucky, placed second at Fair Hill and won the Wits End CIC***-W (Ont.) and advanced divisions at Pine Top (Ga.) and Millbrook (N.Y.). This spring, they finished 16th in The Fork CIC*** (N.C.).

Dobbin is one of my all-time favorites. He jumps around the Horse Park as if someone had shown him the course map the night before. Corinne has had an uneven season, and they are going to have to reach deep inside of themselves to reproduce some of their former successes here at Rolex.

Isabella II: b. m., 16 hands, 12 years, U.S.-bred Oldenburg (Idocus—Dynamic), owned by rider.
Susie Beale (GBR): age 44, Phoenixville, Pa.
In 2007 and 2008, they completed the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.), and this spring they placed 10th in an intermediate division at Pine Top (Ga.) and sixth at advanced at the same venue, and they were also 15th in the advanced at The Fork (N.C.). Isabella also finished fifth in an advanced division at Southern Pines (N.C.) with rider Boyd Martin while Beale recovered from knee surgery.

Susie is an excellent rider, however, she is handicapped by a recent knee operation. She joins Buck Davidson in having a father who has won Burghley. Susie’s father, Jeremy Beale, won Burghley on Victoria Bridge in 1965. As they say down here in the south, “She gits it honest.“ Bruce Davidson won Burghley on Irish Cap in 1974, which was the reason that the Kentucky Horse Park was awarded the World Championships in 1978. This is Isabella’s first four-star experience, and she will benefit from Susie’s solid, sensible cross-country riding, finishing with a few time faults.

Gordonstown: blk. g., 16.1 hands, 11 years, Irish-bred Irish Sport Horse (Cruise On—Drumnacross), owned by rider.
Madeline Blackman (YR): age 19, Ringoes, N.J.
Last year, they completed the Jersey Fresh (N.J.) and Fair Hill (Md.) CCI***s and placed eighth at the Red Hills CIC*** (Fla.), ninth at the Richland Park CIC*** (Mich.), 13th at the Plantation CIC*** (Pa.) and 15th at The Fork CIC*** (N.C.). This spring, they finished 10th in an intermediate division at Rocking Horse (Fla.), fifth at advanced at Pine Top (Ga.) and 31st in The Fork CIC*** (N.C.).

This Rolex is the biggest challenge of this pair’s career. Madeline is going to be surprised at the intensity of competition at this level. I have seen this pair go well this spring sometimes and not so well sometimes. Madeline has to make sure not to let her evil twin have the ride on Gordonstown this weekend.

Macloud: dk. b. g., 16.3 hands, 17 years, Irish-bred Thoroughbred (Kambalda—Tip The Gold), owned by rider and Katie Walker, Unionville, Pa.
Stephanie Boyer: age 23, Unionville, Pa.
In 2007, they completed the Jersey Fresh CCI*** (N.J.), and last year they completed at Jersey Fresh and the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.). They were also seventh at advanced at Plantation (Pa.). This spring, they placed 10th in an advanced division at Southern Pines (N.C.).

I have not seen this pair compete this year. They have a good record of completions at the three-star level and should be ready for their first four-star competition.

Brandenburg’s Joshua: dk. b. g., 16.2 hands, 14 years, U.S.-bred Thoroughbred (Gilded Rooster—Josh’s Dancer), owned by Southern Edition Farm LLC and William Lowe, Leesburg, Va.
Stephen Bradley: age 47, Leesburg, Va.
In 2006, they placed third at Rolex Kentucky, and last year they finished fourth here. In 2008, they also placed 14th in the CIC*** at The Fork (N.C.) and were short-listed for the Olympic team. This spring, they won an intermediate division at Southern Pines (N.C.) and the advanced at The Fork.

Legendary Olympic track and field athlete Renaldo Nehemiah said, “Tomorrow isn’t promised to athletes.” Stephen and Josh are one of the most talented pairs in the competition this week. They are going to have to rise to the occasion if they want to place well, however. This pair has the capability of winning here, but they have yet to put three good days together in a row. This weekend would be a nice time to change that pattern.

Manny: b. g., 16.2 hands, 9 years, Canadian-bred Thoroughbred-cross (Franc Coeur—Lady Drumore), owned by rider and John and Nadia Burnett, Blackstock, Ont.
Diana Burnett (CAN): age 27, Blackstock, Ont.
In 2007, they completed the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.). Last year, they finished 17th at the Jersey Fresh CCI*** (N.J.), 12th at the Richland Park CIC*** (Mich.) and 17th at The Fork CIC***-W (N.C.). This spring, they placed 13th and 14th in advanced horse trials at Rocking Horse (Fla.) and Southern Pines (N.C.), respectively. They also finished eighth in an intermediate division in Ocala (Fla.) and 43rd in The Fork CIC***.

Unfortunately for Diana, Manny takes a keen interest in his work. The most difficult horse to make time on across country is a horse that pulls, and Manny fits this description. If they can produce a clean round, Diana will have done an excellent job. She was unavailable for comment for this article, as she was busy shopping for new bits.

Syd Kent: dk. b. g., 16.1 hands, 11 years, New Zealand-bred Thoroughbred (by Barbaroom), owned by J.C. Chester, Washington, D.C.
Jan Byyny: age 41, Purcellville, Va.
In 2007, they won the Bromont CCI** (Que.). Last year, they finished seventh at the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.), third at the Richland Park CIC*** (Mich.) and in advanced horse trials placed second at Morven Park (Va.), fourth at Millbrook (N.Y.) and sixth at Plantation (Pa.). This spring, they won an advanced division at Pine Top (Ga.), placed third at advanced at Southern Pines (N.C.), ninth at intermediate at Pine Top and 10th in The Fork CIC*** (N.C.).

Syd is another one of my personal favorites. He has a brain like Einstein and a heart as big as all outdoors. His dressage has been a work in progress, but he’s progressing. He will not win Rolex this year, but Jan has hopes for the future. They will go well here.

Acapulco Jazz: ch. g., 16 hands, 18 years, Mexican-bred Quarter Horse (Just Six—Chicks N Chips), owned by rider.
Bonner Carpenter (YR): age 21, Dallas, Texas.
In 2007, they placed 15th at the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.), and last year they finished third at advanced at Rocking Horse (Fla.) and sixth at Pine Top (Ga.). This spring, they won an advanced division at Rocking Horse and placed sixth at intermediate at the same venue.

“Jazz” and Bonner went very well here last year for a rookie. She’s determined to return to Rolex and improve her performance.

Madison Park: b. g., 17 hands, 11 years, U.S.-bred Thoroughbred (Monaco Magic—Mistress Of Mine), owned by rider and Jennifer Carter, Sparr, Fla.
Kyle Carter (CAN): age 40, Sparr, Fla.
Last year, they placed 35th at the Olympic Games (Hong Kong), 18th at Rolex Kentucky, 13th at the Red Hills CIC***-W (Fla.) and The Fork CIC*** (N.C.) and seventh in an advanced division at Pine Top (Ga.). This spring, they were second at intermediate at Rocking Horse (Fla.), sixth at advanced at Rocking Horse, 10th at advanced at Southern Pines (N.C.) and 29th in The Fork CIC***.

Madison Park has had a difficult time adjusting to the demands that upper level dressage requires. However, Kyle has obviously persevered, as his results are far better now than they were 12 months ago. Look for this pair to finish just a few points beyond their dressage score. Unfortunately, their dressage score will keep them out of the top 10.

Eveready: dk. b. g., 15.2 hands, 10 years, Swedish Warmblood (Irco Mena—Batteries Not Included), owned by rider.
Barbara Crabo: age 39, Scottsdale, Ariz.
In 2008, they completed the Jersey Fresh CCI*** (N.J.) and Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.), placed fourth in the Rebecca Farm CIC***-W (Mont.) and 14th at the Galway Downs CIC*** (Calif.). They also won an advanced horse trial at Copper Meadows (Calif.) and finished ninth at advanced at Twin Rivers (Calif.). This spring they finished 10th in the Galway Downs CIC*** and 12th at advanced at Twin Rivers.

I have not seen this pair compete this year. They have the resume necessary to jump around Rolex, however, it’s difficult for combinations bound for Rolex to prepare on the West Coast. The technical specifications are identical, but the intensity of the competition on the West Coast is lacking. Eveready and Barbara should complete the course here, but after looking at the polish of the best riders in the world she can be forgiven for thinking, like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid said, “Where’d they get these guys?”

Radio Flyer: ch. g., 16.2 hands, 15 years, U.S.-bred Thoroughbred (Stick Together—Gypsy Hoofer), owned by rider.
Dorothy Crowell: age 47, Frankfort, Ky.
Last year, they were 22nd at Rolex Kentucky and finished third in the advanced at Richland Park (Mich.).
This spring they won an intermediate horse trial at Rocking Horse (Fla.) and placed 10th at advanced at the same venue.

Radio Flyer and Dorothy have had an up and down season, and some of the downs have been rather jarring. Dorothy will have to call on all of her skills to produce a clean round with this horse. Dorothy is a hometown favorite, and the cheers that will accompany her will be an enormous help to her as she negotiates the course.

Cruise Lion: gr. g., 16.2 hands, 10 years, Irish Sport Horse (Cruising—Cara Lion), owned by rider.
Bruce Davidson: age 59, Unionville, Pa.
In 2007, they placed second at the Florida CCI**, and last year in intermediate horse trials they won at Surefire Farm (Va.), placed second at Fair Hill (Md.) and fifth at Rocking Horse (Fla.). At the advanced level, they finished second at Maui Jim (Ill.) and seventh at Red Hills (Fla.), and they also placed 14th at the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.) and fifth at the Plantation CIC*** (Pa.). This spring at Rocking Horse they were 12th at intermediate and ninth at advanced.

If you want to see a sympathetic, educational ride being given to a first-time four-star horse, watch Bruce carefully. I have no doubt that Bruce will apply his 40 years of experience, and that Cruise Lion will come through the finish line a far more mature horse than when he started.

Jam: gr. m., 16.1 hands, 13 years, U.S.-bred Thoroughbred (Snar—Toitay), owned by rider.
Bruce Davidson: age 59, Unionville, Pa.
In 2006, they placed fourth at the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.), and the following year they finished 10th at the Land Rover Burghley CCI**** (England). In 2008, Jam competed in Europe with Irish rider Jayne Doherty. This spring at Rocking Horse, Davidson and Jam placed fifth in an intermediate division and ninth at advanced.

Jam’s disdain for dressage will keep her out of the top 10, but she is a fabulous jumper, and I expect this pair to light up the Park on Saturday. NFL fans thronged to watch Brett Favre this past season, MLB fans clamor for Troy Glaus’ autograph, and as for eventing fans, well, we’re in for a treat this Saturday afternoon. Sit back and watch someone who really, but really, knows how to ride.

Ballynoe Castle RM: b. g., 16.1 hands, 9 years, Irish-bred Belgian Warmblood-Irish Thoroughbred (Ramiro B—Ballyvaldon Natalie), owned by Cassandra Segal, Pottersville, N.J.
Buck Davidson: age 33, Riegelsville, Pa., and Ocala, Fla.
In 2007, they won the Red Hills CIC** (Fla.), placed fourth at the Florida CCI**, second at the Jersey Fresh CCI** (N.J.) and eighth at the CCI** Olympic Test Event (Hong Kong). Last year, they won an advanced division at Rocking Horse (Fla.), placed second at the Jersey Fresh CCI***, fifth at the Red Hills CIC*** and were short-listed for the Olympic team. This spring they won another advanced division at Rocking Horse, finished second at advanced at Southern Pines (N.C.) and third in the advanced at The Fork (N.C.).

This partnership has had an extremely successful spring season. However, their technical skills are not yet at the level required for a top placing at Rolex. They will put up a super performance, but there are too many more experienced horses and riders here, and they will finish out of the top 10.

My Boy Bobby: ch. g., 16.3 hands, 13 years, Irish Sport Horse, owned by Carl and Cassandra Segal, Pottersville, N.J.
Buck Davidson: age 33, Riegelsville, Pa., and Ocala, Fla.
In 2007, My Boy Bobby placed third in the Jersey Fresh CCI** (N.J.) with rider Jessica Kiener. Last year with Davidson, the horse won an intermediate division at Millbrook (N.Y.), placed second in the Richland Park CIC*** (Mich.), third in the Wits End CIC***-W (Ont.) and 19th at the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.). This spring, they won The Fork CIC*** (N.C.) as well as advanced divisions at Rocking Horse (Fla.) and Southern Pines (N.C.) and finished third at intermediate at Rocking Horse.

While Buck and Bobby have been successful this spring, they look a little short of fitness for this level; time faults and a couple of rails will mar an otherwise acceptable performance.

Quirinal de la Bastide: blk. g., 9 years, Belgian Warmblood (Kannan—Tanagra), owned by M. Carreiro, France.
Stanislas de Zuchowicz (FRA): age 33, France.
In 2008, they placed sixth in the Saumur CIC** (France), 12th in the Fontainebleau CIC* (France), 24th at the Compiègne CCI** (France), 13th in the Martinvast CIC***-W (France) and 21st in the HSBC FEI World Cup Final (France) and the Boekelo CCI*** (the Netherlands).

I have not seen this pair compete. Based on their results, I suspect they are here for a quiet, educational ride around the Park and that their long-term goal is to return here for the World Equestrian Games in 2010.

Somerset II: dk. b. g., 17 hands, 13 years, British-bred Thoroughbred, owned by Edith and Sean Rameika, Berryville, Va., and Ocala Horse Properties LLC, Reddick, Fla.
Sara Dierks: age 30, Berryville, Va.
In 2007, they finished 18th at the Jersey Fresh CCI*** (N.J.), and last year they placed fourth there and sixth at the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.). Also in 2008, they won the Maui Jim CIC*** (Ill.), placed sixth at the Plantation CIC*** (Pa.), eighth at The Fork CIC*** (N.C.), seventh in the advanced division of the American Eventing Championships (Ill.) and third at advanced at Southern Pines (N.C.). This spring they placed second in an intermediate division at Ocala (Fla.), third in an advanced at Southern Pines and eighth in The Fork CIC***.

Somerset is a very different horse from Sara’s other rides here in the past. His dressage is still under construction, and he goes a great gallop cross-country. In years past, Sara had to kick like a mad fiend to get around, but this year she must ride quietly and soberly. A steady clear round is well within their grasp.

Buenos Aires: b. g., 16.3 hands, 12 years, Canadian Warmblood (Bajazzo—Amphora), owned by rider.
Sandra Donnelly (CAN): age 39, Calgary, Alta.
In 2007, they placed fifth in the advanced division at Jersey Fresh (N.J.) and sixth at the Pan American Games (Brazil), and last year they finished 15th at Rolex Kentucky and 30th at the Olympic Games (Hong Kong). They also placed 10th at the Red Hills CIC*** (Fla.) and second in an advanced division at Pine Top (Ga.). This spring they placed second in the advanced horse trials at Twin Rivers (Calif.) and fourth in the Galway Downs CIC*** (Calif.).

Sandra is my favorite type of rider. She rarely repeats a mistake and she has a work ethic to emulate. Her recent successes at the 2008 Olympics will have improved her morale. She is handicapped this year by preparing for Rolex on the West Coast. Due to their lack of top-level competition this year, I think Sandra will be pleased to finish just outside the top 10 placings.

Connaught: b. g., 16.1 hands, 16 years, Irish-bred Irish Sport Horse (Ballysimon—Bromehill Rogue), owned by Bruce Duchossois, Aiken, S.C.
Phillip Dutton: age 45, West Grove, Pa.
In 2007, they placed second at Rolex Kentucky, and last year they won here. Also in 2008, they finished second in the advanced division at The Fork (N.C.) and completed the Olympic Games (Hong Kong), but were later disqualified for illegal equipment. This spring, they placed second in the advanced division at The Fork.

“Simon” is one of the few horses in the competition that can finish on his dressage score. If this were a normal year at Rolex, I would pick Phillip to win his second title on this horse. The strong foreign contingent has raised the bar, however. In addition, Simon won here last year, and horses rarely repeat their best performances these days. I predict that this pair will finish in the top five.

The Foreman: b. g., 16.1 hands, 13 years, U.S.-bred Thoroughbred (Across The Field—Four Flora), owned by Ann Jones, Coatesville, Pa.
Phillip Dutton: age 45, West Grove, Pa.
In 2006, they won the Red Hills CIC*** (Fla.), and the following year they won the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.). In 2008, they were short-listed for the Olympic Games team and placed 11th in an intermediate division at Southern Pines (N.C.) and the CIC***-W at The Fork (N.C.). This spring they also placed 11th in an advanced division at Southern Pines.

“Chip” has had a quiet preparation this spring, but that is not any indication of form at Rolex for Phillip’s horses. I have learned this to my sorrow. Unlike normal horsemen, Phillip does not need competitions to tell him how his horses are training. Unfortunately, he does not share this knowledge with nosy journalists. Phillip is the only rider this year to have three horses entered. My guess is that he will run two of them, and he will finish in the top 10 with the two he chooses to run. If you can guess which two he will choose, there might be a spot on the Chronicle’s prognosticating team for you. If he runs all three, expect him to finish all three horses in the top 10 lineup.

Woodburn:
ch. g., 16 hands, 13 years, New Zealand-bred Thoroughbred (Herewood The Wake—Princess Heights), owned by Acorn Hill Farm, Madison, Va.
Phillip Dutton: age 45, West Grove, Pa.
In 2007, they placed third in the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.) and won the Wits End CIC*** (Ont.). Last year, they finished ninth at Rolex Kentucky, 15th at The Fork CIC*** (N.C.), won an intermediate division at Pine Top (Ga.) and were short-listed for the Olympic Games team. This spring, they placed seventh in an advanced division at Southern Pines (N.C.).

Woodburn is one of the scopiest horses here and a serious prospect to do well at the WEG. He is so scopey that he thinks these jumps are easy, and he’s ridden by someone who makes a habit of producing a horse at his best at the right moment. My best guess is that Woodburn’s time is now, and that he and Phillip will win the 2009 Rolex.

Navigator: ch. g., 16.1 hands, 10 years, Australian-bred Thoroughbred (Kettrice—Royal Mistress), owned by Barts Ladies, Marnhull, Dorset, England.
William Fox-Pitt (GBR): age 40, Newton, Dorset, England.
In 2007, they won the Houghton Hall CCI** (England), and last year they won the Bramham CCI*** (England) and the Burnham Market CIC*** (England). They also placed sixth at the Boekelo CCI*** (the Netherlands) and 16th at the Barbury Castle CIC** (England).

This pair has a tremendously successful record at the three-star level. I expect William to make the transition to the next level easily and to establish himself as a future pick for the WEG. William is one of the most talented and experienced riders in the world. Whenever I know William is entered at Rolex, I put the word out to my serious students to watch him every chance they get. He rides the way I want them to ride. I am certain that his efforts will place him in the top 10.

Seacookie: b. g., 16.2 hands, 10 years, German-bred Thoroughbred (Helikon—Sonnewende), owned by Catherine Witt, Nantwich, Cheshire, England.
William Fox-Pitt (GBR): age 40, Newton, Dorset, England.
In 2007 with German rider Ingrid Klimke, Seacookie won the Marbach CIC*** (Germany), placed seventh at the Aachen CICO*** (Germany), 15th at the Thirlestane CIC*** (Scotland) and 35th at the Boekelo CCI*** (the Netherlands). With Fox-Pitt in 2008, the horse placed third at the Barbury Castle CIC** (England), ninth at the Tattersalls CIC***-W (Ireland) and 10th at the Boekelo CCI***.

Seacookie and William are a relatively new partnership, and this is their first four-star competition together. I would expect William to go a bit quietly here in an attempt to form a better relationship for the future.

Headley Britannia: ch. m., 15.3 hands, 16 years, Thoroughbred-Irish Draught (Jumbo—Alan’s Bambi), owned by rider and Clayton Fredericks, Deviles, Wiltshire, England.
Lucinda Fredericks (AUS): age 43, Deviles, Wiltshire, England.
In 2006, they won the Land Rover Burghley CCI**** (England) and the following spring they won the Mitsubishi Badminton CCI**** (England). Last year, they won the Barbury Castle CIC*** (England) and finished 10th at the Olympic Games (Hong Kong), as well as fourth at the Chatsworth CIC*** (England) and 28th at the Fontainebleau CIC***-W (France). This spring, they placed third at the Fontainebleau CICO***.

I have watched this pair on video for several years and am excited to finally see them in person. They bring an impressive list of successes with them. There are only a handful of horses that have won both Badminton and Burghley, and this pair is the latest addition to that select society. Last fall their results were not what Lucinda had hoped for; Lucinda suffered from several operations on her leg due to an infection and that severely hampered her riding. However, she is an excellent horsewoman, and I am sure she has worked the kinks out over the winter. They have gone well this spring and should finish in the top five.

Courageous Comet:
gr. g., 16.2 hands, 13 years, U.S.-bred Thoroughbred (Comet Shine—Rosenelli), owned by rider and Tom Holder, Mendota Heights, Minn.
Becky Holder: age 40, Mendota Heights, Minn.
In 2006, they were 13th at Rolex Kentucky, and in 2007 they won the CIC***s at Maui Jim (Ill.) and Richland Park (Mich.). Last year, they were second at Rolex Kentucky, 42nd at the Olympic Games (Hong Kong) and won an advanced division at Southern Pines (N.C.). This spring, they placed second in intermediate at Pine Top (Ga.) and at advanced at Southern Pines.

Comet and Becky have been plagued by inconsistency this spring. Although Becky continues to search for the overall answer, this pair can be counted on for a sparkling dressage performance. My suspicion is that her Rolex curse will continue, and she will be disappointed to finish outside the top 10.

Arctic Dancer: dk. b. g., 16.2 hands, 13 years, U.S.-bred Thoroughbred (Hawkster—Icecaprice), owned by rider and Ralph Holstein, Sr.
Ralph Holstein: age 24, Hinckley, Ohio.
In 2007, they finished 11th at the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.), ninth at the Florida CCI**, fifth at the Maui Jim CIC** (Ill.) and won an advanced division at Morven Park (Va.). Last year, they placed fourth in the advanced division at Richland Park (Mich.). This spring in advanced horse trials, they placed fifth and eighth at Rocking Horse (Fla.), sixth at Southern Pines (N.C.) and seventh at The Fork (N.C.).

Every year for this article I present an imaginary trophy that I refer to as the “Whodat? Award.” This trophy goes to the rider I think will do the best in his first attempt at Rolex. The joke, of course, is that when the general public reads the results and comes across Ralph’s name, they will say “Whodat?” Ralph is not ready to beat the big boys, but he will put up a good showing here this weekend, and I predict he’ll finish the best of the rookie riders. The future is now for an athlete. If Ralph kicks like the Devil is on his tail, he will do well…if he goes into freeze-frame mode, all bets are off.

Ringwood Cockatoo: gr. g., 18 years, Irish-bred Irish Sport Horse (Peacock—Bailey’s Folly), owned by Mary and
Frederick Davidson and DOKR, Warendorf, Germany.
Bettina Hoy (GER): age 46, Warendorf, Germany.
In 2006, they placed sixth individually and won team gold at the World Equestrian Games (Germany), and in 2007 they won the Luhmühlen CIC*** (Germany) and placed third at the European Championships (Italy). Last year, they won the Pau CCI**** (France), and this spring they won the Fontainebleau CICO*** (France).

If you only watch one dressage test all week, this is the one. They are the only pair that can consistently win the dressage at four-star events, and I expect a sparkling dressage performance from them. At the 2004 Olympics Games, Bettina was convicted by the authorities of RWB (Riding While Blonde). She seems to have recovered from that, and she and “Cocky” are on form this spring. I am sure that she and Cocky will finish in the top 10 here this weekend.

Tankers Town: ch. g., 15 years, Irish-bred Thoroughbred (Diamond Clover—Money Gone West, Bulldozer), owned by rider and Janet and Terry Hunt, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England.
Sharon Hunt (GBR): age 31, Bury St. Edmonds, Suffolk, England.
In 2006, they finished ninth individually and won team silver at the World Equestrian Games (Germany) and sixth at the Mitsubishi Badminton CCI**** (England). In 2007 CIC***s, they were fifth at Chatsworth (England) and 11th at Aachen (Germany). Last year, they placed fifth at Mitsubishi Badminton, sixth at the Belton CIC*** (Germany), 20th at the Barbury Castle CIC*** (England) and 35th at the Olympic Games (Hong Kong).

Sharon is a real goer, and Tankers Town is an Olympic and WEG veteran. I first saw this pair at the 2006 WEG in Aachen and was very impressed. Sharon’s riding is a nice mix of polish and “git ’er done.” I expect them to go well and to finish just inside the top 10.

Sinjang: b. g., 13 years, Holsteiner (Sir Shostakovich—Steppe), owned by rider.
Beeke Kaack (GER): age 31, Schmalensee, Germany.
In 2007, they were eighth at the Luhmühlen CCI**** (Germany). Last year, they placed 11th in the European Championships (Italy), second at the Schenefeld CIC***-W (Germany), 21st at the Pardubice CIC*** (Czech Republic), 22nd at the Aachen CICO*** (Germany), 25th at the Luhmühlen CIC*** and 33rd at the Marbach CIC*** (Germany). This spring, they finished 60th at the Fontainebleau CICO*** (France).

Sinjang is still a work in progress at this level, and I’m sure they are here for an educational experience rather than a competitive attempt. They will be much the better for their experiences this weekend.

Esker Riada:
b. g., 17.2 hands, 16 years, Irish Sport Horse (Vivaldi—Portaloo Belle), owned by rider.
Cayla Kitayama: age 22, Orinda, Calif.
In 2007, they won an advanced division at Morven Park (Va.) and completed the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.), and in 2008 they finished ninth there and 14th at The Fork CIC***-W (N.C.). This spring, they finished second in an intermediate division at Pine Top (Ga.), eighth at advanced at Southern Pines (N.C.) and 30th in The Fork CIC***.

Esker Riada is one of the most intelligent and experienced horses in the competition. Cayla must remember to put three good days together. If she can do that, she has the potential of placing well here.

Oz: b. g., 16 hands, 13 years, U.S.-bred Thoroughbred, owned by rider.
Mikki Kuchta: age 44, Patterson, N.Y.
In 2007, they were 22nd at the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.). Last year, they placed sixth in the advanced at Rocking Horse (Fla.), fourth in the advanced at The Fork (N.C.), seventh at advanced at Millbrook (N.Y.) and 25th at Rolex Kentucky. This spring, they finished sixth at Pine Top Advanced (Ga.) and 11th in the advanced at The Fork.

Another one of my personal favorites, Oz was born in the wrong century. He would have been a star when the classic three-day format was used, because he would still be pulling at the end of 20 miles. Mikki is a superlative horsewoman, and she will turn in an adequate performance in dressage, and go clean and fast cross-country. She will then keep her fingers crossed until she gets through the finish line of the show jumping…Oz has no conscience when it comes to colored rails.

ESB Irish Doctrine: dk. b. g., 16 hands, 13 years, Australian-bred Irish Sport Horse cross (ESB Irish Descent—Jemima Belle), owned by Elkins Wetherill, Plymouth Meeting, Pa.
Ashley Leith: age 33, Ocala, Fla.
In 2007, they placed 27th at the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.). Last year, they won the Bromont CIC** (Que.), placed fourth at the Maui Jim CIC*** (Ill.), 10th in an advanced division at Five Points (N.C.) and 13th at advanced at Fair Hill. This spring at Rocking Horse (Fla.), they placed seventh in a preliminary division and ninth at intermediate, and they also finished 11th at advanced at The Fork (N.C.).

Ashley and ESB Irish Doctrine will make their first attempt at the four-star level this weekend. Ashley must concentrate on completion, not competition, this weekend. This pair will produce a clear round cross-country, albeit with time faults, and they should feel very pleased with the results. A good combination for the future.

Blom’s Oncarlos:
b. g., 13 years, Dutch Warmblood (Faram—Dolca), owned by rider and C. Frydal, the Netherlands.
Tim Lips (NED): age 23, Made, the Netherlands.
In 2007, the pair placed 10th at the Boekelo CCI*** (the Netherlands). In 2008, they placed second in the Aachen CICO*** (Germany), eighth in the Marbach CIC*** (Germany), seventh in the Vairano CIC*** (Italy), sixth in the Barroca d’Alva CCI*** (Portugal) and 21st at the Olympic Games (Hong Kong).

I have not seen this pair compete. They are Olympic veterans who should go well here and place just outside the top 10.

Above ‘N’ Beyond: ch. g., 16 hands, 13 years, Canadian-bred Thoroughbred (Colonel Stevens—Sasudio), owned by rider.
Tiffani Loudon-Meetze: age 33, Winnsboro, S.C.
In 2008, they were 15th at the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.), and at advanced they placed third at Five Points (N.C.) and eighth at The Fork (N.C.). This spring, they placed second in the intermediate at Full Gallop Farm (S.C.) and sixth in The Fork CIC***.

Tiffani was a winner here when this event was held at the three-star level. She will put in a good performance, but it remains to be seen if she and her horse can fight their way to a top 10 placing. My guess is that they are a year away from that level of expertise.

Up Spirit: b. g., 16.3 hands, 10 years, Irish-bred Thoroughbred, owned by rider, Carol Montgomery and Bill and Holly Becker, Dallas, Texas.
Clark Montgomery: age 28, Ocala, Fla.
In 2007, they won the Jersey Fresh CCI** (N.J.), placed fourth at the Wits End CIC*** (Ont.) and 33rd at the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.). Last year, they won the Red Hills CIC***-W (Fla.), placed second at The Fork CIC***-W (N.C.), 58th at the Barbury Castle CIC*** (England) and were short-listed for the Olympic Games team. This spring, they finished ninth at intermediate at Rocking Horse (Fla.), and in advanced horse trials they placed third at Rocking Horse and fourth at Southern Pines (N.C.).

Up Spirit and Clark have good credentials, but they are guilty of inconsistent results. They have had an up and down preparation this spring, and Clark will have to make sure that they are up for the competition this weekend.

Colombo: b. g., 16.3 hands, 15 years, Swedish Warmblood (Eighty Eight Keys—Colette), owned by Michael and Elaine Davies, Elgin, Ont.
Selena O’Hanlon (CAN): age 28, Elgin, Ont.
Last year, they placed 20th at Rolex Kentucky, 45th at the Olympic Games (Hong Kong), fifth at the Red Hills CIC***-W (Fla.) and won an advanced division at Rocking Horse (Fla.). This spring, they finished third in an advanced division at Rocking Horse.

Selena made an uncharacteristic mental mistake at her final outing at The Fork. She is a good rider on a good horse, and she will be riding this weekend with smoke pouring out of her helmet. Her determination to finish well this weekend will put her just outside the top 10.

Jos Aladar: b. g., 16.3 hands, 11 years, Argentine-bred Thoroughbred, owned by rider.
Jose Ortelli Jr. (ARG): age 25, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
In 2006, they won the Campo de Mayo CIC*** (Argentina). In 2008, they placed 16th at the Red Hills CIC***-W (Fla.) and The Fork CIC***-W (N.C.). This spring, they were 13th in an intermediate division at Pine Top (Ga.) and fifth at advanced there, and they also placed ninth at advanced at Southern Pines (N.C.) and 35th in The Fork CIC***.

Jos Aladar has a tremendous leap, but Jose is still trying to refine and polish this promising horse. Their technical skills are continually improving, and I’m sure they will put up a good performance here. This is a combination for the future, not this year.

Jos Aquiles: blk. g., 16.3 hands, 10 years, Uruguayan-bred Thoroughbred, owned by rider.
Jose Ortelli Jr. (ARG): age 25, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Last year, they finished 23rd at the Red Hills CIC*** (Fla.) and 24th at The Fork CIC*** (N.C.). This spring, they completed a preliminary horse trial at Rocking Horse (Fla.), placed 15th at intermediate and fourth at advanced at Pine Top (Ga.) and also finished 13th in an advanced division at Southern Pines (N.C.) and 45th in The Fork CIC***.

Jose will concentrate this weekend on giving Jos Aquiles a quiet, educational ride. This is a good partnership, but they are not yet ready to deliver a top placing.

Critical Decision: b. g., 17.1 hands, 13 years, U.S.-bred Oldenburg-Thoroughbred (by Consul), owned by Jessica Ransehousen, Unionville, Pa.
Missy Ransehousen: age 38, Unionville, Pa.
In 2008, they finished third at Rolex Kentucky, 22nd at The Fork CIC*** (N.C.), fifth in the advanced at Southern Pines (N.C.) and eighth in the advanced at Rocking Horse (Fla.). This spring, they were 19th in an intermediate division and second in an advanced at Rocking Horse, and they also placed 18th at advanced at Southern Pines (N.C.) and 15th in The Fork CIC***.

Missy and Critical Decision are not quite in the groove that they found last spring when they finished in third place here. However, they will go well here, and were it not for the unusual number of excellent foreign riders, Missy would be well placed.

The Alchemyst: ch. g., 16.3 hands, 10 years, Canadian Sport Horse (by Espiritu), owned by rider.
Debbie Rosen: age 48, Calabasas, Calif.
In 2007, they were 32nd at the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.). Last year, they finished 19th at the Jersey Fresh CCI*** (N.J.), second at the Rebecca Farm CIC***-W (Mont.), fifth at the Galway Downs CIC*** (Calif.) and fourth in the advanced at Twin Rivers (Calif.). This spring, they placed seventh in the Galway Downs CIC*** and 11th in an intermediate division there, as well as eighth in the advanced at Twin Rivers.

Debbie and this horse were very unlucky not to place well at Fair Hill this past fall. They are still a work in progress at this level, but they are continually improving, and I expect them to go well here. Although they did their preparation on the West Coast, this is not Debbie ‘s first rodeo, and she will not be backed off by the occasion.

Cavaldi: b. g., 14 years, 16.1 hands, Irish-bred Irish Sport Horse (Cavalier Royale—Catell, Cataldi) owned by rider and Janet Schmolze, Califon, N.J.
Kristin Schmolze: age 26, Califon, N.J.
In 2007, they were 31st at Rolex Kentucky and 30th at the Land Rover Burghley CCI**** (England). They didn’t compete in 2008, but this spring they placed ninth in an intermediate/preliminary division at Sporting Days In Aiken (S.C.) and 11th at advanced at Southern Pines (N.C.).

This is an experienced combination, but their dressage will prevent them from placing very high up the list. Kris is a good rider with a good horse, and they will continue to improve in the future.

Killian O’Connor: gr. g., 17 hands, 11 years, Irish-bred Irish Sport Horse-Selle Français (by Heiros), owned by Tracy Bowman, Martinez, Calif.
Jolie Sexson: age 26, Martinez, Calif.
Last year, they placed 16th at the Jersey Fresh CCI*** (N.J.) and sixth in the Galway Downs CIC*** (Calif.). This spring, they won the intermediate division at Galway Downs and an advanced horse trial at Twin Rivers (Calif.). They also placed third in the Galway Downs CIC***.

I have not seen this pair compete. They’re well spoken of on the West Coast and should be able to complete their first attempt at Rolex. Their experience here this weekend should be educational rather than competitive. (Not being picked for the “Whodat?” award should be motivation enough for her to show the experts a thing or two!)

Kachemak Bay: dk. b. g., 16 hands, 15 years, Canadian-bred Thoroughbred (Prosperous—Gladring), owned by Frankie Simpson, Gananoque, Ont.
Karl Slezak (CAN): age 27, Caledon, Ont.
Last year, they placed 21st at the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.), sixth in the Wits End CIC***-W (Ont.), eighth in the Richland Park CIC*** (Mich.) and 15th in an advanced division at Millbrook (N.Y.). This spring, they won an intermediate division at Rocking Horse (Fla.) and placed 10th at advanced at Southern Pines (N.C.).

Kachemak Bay is a difficult ride across country, and Karl will spend most of his time trying to settle his horse rather than encouraging him to go faster. They are a promising pair but not yet ready to be competitive.

Chaos Theory: dk. b. g., 18 years, U.S.-bred Thoroughbred, owned by rider.
Tamra Smith: age 34, Hemet, Calif.
In 2008, they placed 24th at the Jersey Fresh CCI*** (N.J.), eighth at the Galway Downs CIC*** (Calif.) and third at the Galway Downs CCI**. In advanced horse trials, they won at Woodside (Calif.) and placed third and sixth at Twin Rivers (Calif.). This spring, they were ninth at intermediate at Twin Rivers, fourth in the advanced/intermediate at Three Day Ranch (Calif.) and 11th in the Galway Downs CIC***.

Tamra and Chaos Theory join quite a large contingent coming from the West Coast. This is their first attempt at Rolex, and they will be concentrating on a steady, clear round.

Arthur: ch. g., 17 hands, 10 years, U.S.-bred Irish Thoroughbred (by Brandenburg’s Windstar), owned by rider and William and Carolyn Springer.
Allison Springer: age 34, Marshall, Va.
In 2007, they placed eighth at the Jersey Fresh CCI*** (N.J.) and 19th at the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.). Last year, they were 13th at Rolex Kentucky, second at the Maui Jim CIC*** (Ill.) and third at the Red Hills CIC***-W (Fla.) and The Fork CIC***-W (N.C.). This spring, they placed sixth at intermediate at Pine Top (Ga.) and fourth at advanced there.

Allison and Arthur are running out of second chances. Arthur is one of the most talented horses here. He is a quirky ride, but Allison knows him intimately. She must use that knowledge and her considerable experience to produce the results that excellence requires. Allison has been disappointed in years past to be left off the USET lists. The simple answer is that you never give the selectors a reason to leave you off the list. Winning is the best revenge.

Destination Known: gr. g., 16.3 hands, 11 years, U.S.-bred Thoroughbred, owned by rider.
Allison Springer: age 34, Marshall, Va.
In 2007, they won the Richland Park CIC** (Mich.) and were second in the Bromont CCI** (Que.). Last year, they placed fourth at the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.), sixth at the Jersey Fresh CCI*** (N.J.) and seventh at the Red Hills CIC*** (Fla.). This spring, they placed sixth at Pine Top (Ga.) in an intermediate and an advanced division, and they were 39th in The Fork CIC*** (N.C.).

Destination Known is a promising prospect. He needs a quiet, sophisticated ride on his first attempt at four-star competition.

Mr. Big: br. g., 15 hands, 18 years, U.S.-bred Thoroughbred (Touch Of Pleasure—Maggoty), owned by rider.
Julia Steinberg: age 47, West Grove, Pa.
In 2008, they finished 24th at Rolex Kentucky, 17th at the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.), 12th in the Red Hills CIC*** (Fla.) and seventh in the advanced at The Fork (N.C.). This spring, they placed 13th in a preliminary division at Southern Pines (N.C.).

Mr. Big is another one of my personal favorites. He has a face to die for and a brain like a computer. He can jump as far and as fast as Julia wants him to jump. If she puts her hands down and attacks the course, all will be well.

Hollywood: b. g., 16.3 hands, 17 years, U.S.-bred Thoroughbred (Mighty Adversary—True Knight), owned by rider.
Kelly Sult: age 22, Erie, Pa.
In 2007, they finished eighth at the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.) and sixth at the North American Junior and Young Riders Championships CCI** (Va.). Last year, they were 14th at Rolex Kentucky and 13th at Fair Hill. In 2008 advanced divisions, they won at Pine Top (Ga.), placed second at Richland Park (Mich.), fifth at Red Hills (Fla.) and 16th at The Fork (N.C.). This spring, they won an advanced division at Southern Pines (N.C.) and placed fourth in the advanced at The Fork.

This is a promising combination for the future. I do not expect them to be in the top placings this year, but they should easily improve from last year’s performance.

Matelot Du Grand Val: b. g., 9 years, Selle Français (Eveil de la Cour—Marine), owned by rider and M. Dubois, France.
Jean Teulère (FRA): age 55, Saumur, France.
Last year, they were 18th at the Jardy CCI** (France), third in the Saumur CIC** (France), sixth at the Martinvast CIC***-W (France), 12th at the HSBC FEI World Cup Final (France) and 22nd at the Boekelo CCI*** (the Netherlands). This spring, they placed seventh at the Fontainebleau CICO*** (France).

Jean is too experienced a competitor to disregard. While this horse is a bit new to four-star competition, their recent results say that they are reaching top form at the right time. Like Phillip Dutton, Jean has too much experience at this level for me to bet against him. Expect to see this pair in the top five.

Orion: b. g., 16.2 hands, 10 years, U.S.-bred Thoroughbred (by Private Mint), owned by rider.
Craig Thompson: age 40, Wagener, S.C.
In 2007, they were 27th in the Jersey Fresh CCI*** (N.J.). Last year, they placed third at advanced at Plantation (Pa.) and eighth at advanced at Richland Park (Mich.). This spring, they placed fourth at intermediate at Southern Pines (N.C.) and 10th in the advanced at The Fork (N.C.).

Craig and Orion are a little short of experience at the four-star level, and a steady but clear round is going to be their goal here this weekend.

The Ghost Of Hamish:
ch. g., 13 years, owned by Harald Salomon, FORS e.V. and Warendorf & Damp, Germany
Peter Thomsen (GER): age 47, Lindewitt, Germany.
In 2007, the pair placed 10th at the Mitsubishi Badminton CCI**** (England). Last year, they finished fifth at the Malmö CIC***-W (Sweden), seventh at the Luhmühlen CIC*** (Germany), 26th at the Aachen CICO*** (Germany) and 38th at the Olympic Games (Hong Kong). This spring they were 36th at the Fontainebleau CICO*** (France).

This is an experienced pair, however, their results so far this spring do not indicate a return to their prior form. They will have no problem jumping around, but I think their technical skills will lack a bit of the necessary polish.

Hildago de l’Ile: b. g., 14 years, Selle Français (Uri de Longbost—Triolina), owned by Girard Claudon, France.
Nicolas Touzaint (FRA): age 29, Angers, France.
In 2006, they placed 28th individually at the World Equestrian Games (Germany). Last year, they won the Mitsubishi Badminton CCI**** (England) and the Pau CCI**** (France). They also placed third at the Aachen CICO*** (Germany), fifth at the HSBC FEI World Cup Final (France) and eighth at the Fontainebleau CIC***-W (France). This spring, they placed fourth at the Fontainebleau CICO***.

The only reason I am not picking this pair to win this year is that they have been so phenomenally successful over the past year. Short format horses are difficult to keep at the razor sharpness required for a winning effort. It is no coincidence that we have not had a repeat winner (same horse and rider) of Rolex since the change from the classic format to the short format. The final placings will be determined in the show jumping phase, and my guess is that Nicolas will finish just short of winning here this year.

Carousel Quest: gr. g., 16.3 hands, 14 years, (Carousel—Vickidora) owned by Andrew Cawthray, Darley, North Yorkshire, England.
Oliver Townend (GBR): age 26, Ellesmere, Shropshire, England.
In 2006 with British rider Cressida Clague Reading, the horse placed fourth at the Bramham CCI*** (England), and the following year they finished fourth at the Land Rover Burghley CCI**** (England). In 2008 with Townend, he won the advanced at Aston-le-Walls (England), placed second in the advanced at The Festival of British Eventing and won the Thirlestane Castle CIC***(Scotland). This spring, they placed fifth at the Fontainebleau CICO*** (France).

Oliver and Carousel Quest seem to be peaking at the right moment. Oliver is an experienced rider at this level for one so relatively young. He knows the British selectors are watching carefully this weekend. Because he has his eye on a slot on the British WEG team, he has something to prove this year. His performance here this weekend should put him in the top five.

Leyland: b. g., 16.1 hands, 9 years, U.S.-bred Thoroughbred (Roy—Dream Creek), owned by Elisabeth Nicholson, Metamora, Mich.
Amy Tryon: age 39, Duvall, Wash.
Last year, they won the Jersey Fresh CCI*** (N.J.), placed eighth at the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.), second at the Red Hills CIC*** (Fla.) and the American Eventing Championships (Ill.), seventh at The Fork CIC*** (N.C.), 49th at the Barbury Castle CIC*** and were short-listed for the Olympic Games team. This spring, they won the Galway Downs CIC*** (Calif.) and the intermediate at Ram Tap (Calif.) and placed fourth at advanced at Twin Rivers (Calif.).

Amy is an experienced campaigner here at the Horse Park, and she has a lovely horse for the future in Leyland. However, he is not experienced enough yet for her to win this year. Amy will produce a quiet, clear round and be well satisfied with her prospects for 2010 and beyond.

Woodfalls Inigo Jones: ch. g., 17 hands, 10 years, Irish-bred Thoroughbred (Dex—Khonioor Diamond), owned by Ginnie Lyne, Maidstone, Kent, England.
Lucy Wiegersma (GBR): age 32, Beaworth, Devon, England.
In 2007, they were fifth at the Blenheim CCI*** (England). Last year, they placed ninth at the Barroca d’Alva CCI*** (Portugal), fourth at the Thirlestane CIC*** (Scotland), 15th at the Tattersalls CIC***-W (Ireland), 20th at the Burnham Market CIC***-W (England) and 23rd at the Chatsworth CIC***-W (England).

Lucy is a very experienced competitor. The selectors would not send this pair unless they thought they were ready for four-star competition. Having said that, they are not yet ready to match the best efforts of the best combinations here this week.

Opposition Buzz: blk. g., 16.1 hands, 12 years, British-bred Thoroughbred (Fleetwater Opposition—Jungle Bee, Java Tiger), owned by Rosemary Search, Wetherby, West Yorkshire, England.
Nicola Wilson (GBR): age 32, Northallerton, North Yorkshire, England.
In 2007, they were 15th at the Land Rover Burghley CCI*** (England) and 16th at the Mitsubishi Badminton CCI**** (England). Last year, they finished fifth at Burghley, seventh at Badminton, seventh at the Aachen CICO*** (Germany) and 12th at the Burnham Market CIC***-W (England).

I have not seen Opposition Buzz go. Looking at their record, they should go well here, just not quite well enough to finish atop the leaderboard. They have good placings from four-star competition last year, and I certainly expect that trend to continue.

Kingpin: ch. g., 16.1 hands, 13 years, Irish-bred Irish Sport Horse (by Furisto), owned by rider and the Kingpin Syndicate, Newnan, Ga.
Mike Winter (CAN): age 34, Newnan, Ga.
In 2007, they placed eighth at the Pan American Games (Brazil), and last year they placed 12th at Rolex Kentucky and 51st at the Olympic Games (Hong Kong). Also in 2008, they placed sixth at The Fork CIC***-W (N.C.) and 11th in the advanced at Pine Top (Ga.). This spring in intermediate events, they finished fourth at Full Gallop Farm (S.C.) and 10th at Pine Top, and they also placed second in the advanced at Pine Top and 18th in The Fork CIC***.

I worked with this horse and rider combination years ago when Kingpin was a young horse. I thought then that he was a lovely, talented horse with all of the tools to be competitive at the top levels of the sport, and nothing I have seen in the intervening years has made me change my mind. While his dressage is not yet competitive, he should finish with only a few points to add to whatever score he gets in the dressage arena.

Wonderful Will: dk. b. g., 15.1 hands, 12 years, U.S.-bred Thoroughbred (Woodman—Shir Dar), owned by Sher Schwartz, Waverly Hall, Ga.
Mike Winter (CAN): age 34, Newnan, Ga.
In 2007, they placed 20th at the Jersey Fresh CCI*** (N.J.) and 24th at the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.). Last year, they won the Red Hills CIC*** (Fla.) and the Poplar Place CIC*** (Ga.), placed fifth at the Jersey Fresh CCI***, 18th at the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.) and 19th at The Fork CIC***-W (N.C.). This spring at intermediate, they finished sixth at Full Gallop Farm (S.C.) and eighth at Pine Top (Ga.), and they also placed third at advanced at Pine Top and 23rd in The Fork CIC***.

This is Wonderful Will’s first trip to Rolex, and Mike will give him a slightly conservative ride. Will’s technical skills are improving; by next year Mike can think about being competitive.

The Good Witch: b. m., 15.2 hands, 13 years, Irish Sport Horse, owned by Daisy Tognazzini, Los Olivos, Calif.
Jennifer Wooten-DaFoe: age 31, Buellton, Calif.
In 2007, they placed 14th at the Jersey Fresh CCI*** (N.J.), third in the Galway Downs CIC***-W (Calif.) and the Twin Rivers CIC*** (Calif.) and sixth in the Rebecca Farm CIC***-W (Mont.). Last year, they were short-listed for the Olympic Games team, placed seventh at Rolex Kentucky, second at the Galway Downs CIC***, fifth in the advanced at Twin Rivers and won an advanced/intermediate at Three Day Ranch (Calif.). This spring, they won the same competition again and also placed fifth at the Galway Downs CIC***.

Jennifer has a wonderful horse in The Good Witch. But they will have a hard time duplicating their results from Rolex 2008. This pair has continued to improve, but I predict that this year the foreign competitors will elbow Jennifer out of the top 10.

Che Mr. Wiseguy: b. g., 16.1 hands, 9 years, Belgian Warmblood (Jolie—Noblesse), owned by rider.
Ronald Zabala-Goetschel (ECU): age 42, Unionville, Pa.
In 2007, they placed 13th at the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.). Last year, they finished third at the Rio de Janeiro CCI*** (Brazil) and second at the Poplar Place CIC*** (Ga.) and the Stuart CIC** (N.Y.). This spring, they placed second in a training division at Rocking Horse (Fla.) and an intermediate division at Southern Pines (N.C.), and they were 25th in The Fork CIC*** (N.C.).

Che Mr. Wiseguy is a model 21st century horse. He has the paces to win the dressage, the speed and agility to handle the cross-country successfully, and he is careful over colored poles. The only thing this pair is lacking is four-star experience. They are here this year with an eye toward completion and could well be a factor in years to come.

Buckingham Place: b. g., 16 hands, 14 years, U.S.-bred Thoroughbred (Buckaroo—Old Maid), owned by rider and Kim Ziegler, Lincoln University, Pa.
Tara Ziegler: age 24, Lincoln University, Pa.
In 2006, they placed 24th at the Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.), and in 2007 they finished 21st there and 27th at Rolex Kentucky. Last year, they finished 14th at the Red Hills CIC***-W (Fla.), 18th at The Fork CIC***-W (N.C.), 25th at the Fair Hill CCI*** and 19th in the advanced at Morven Park (Va.). This spring, they placed fifth in a preliminary division at Full Gallop Farm (S.C.).

Tara has had an uneven spring, but she and her horse have gone well here in years past.
