For nearly 35 years Iron Spring Farm has searched for the world’s best bloodlines to produce rideable athletes. The result has been world-class horses that have competed at international shows and championships. At the World Equestrian Games in Lexington, KY, the Iron Spring Farm-owned stallions Contango, Glendale, Roemer and Sir Sinclair sired sons, a grandson and a granddaughter that won eight medals in two sports.
“The World Equestrian Games are the pinnacle of equestrian sports,” explained Mary Alice Malone, owner of Iron Spring Farm. “To have four of our stallions represented by their get at the WEG, and earn their owners and riders eight medals is very exciting.”
Malone’s Grand Prix dressage partner Contango has produced many international competitors. His son Ravel, along with his rider Steffen Peters, anchored the US Dressage Team with a 78.596% in the Grand Prix. They continued their success and received a 78.542% in the Grand Prix Special, which earned the pair the individual bronze medal. They capped off an amazing WEG when they clinched another individual bronze medal in the Grand Prix Freestyle with an incredible score of 84.90%. Ravel is a 12-year-old KWPN gelding out of Hautain by Democraat. He is owned by Akiko Yamazaki in San Diego, CA.
Two other WEG medalists feature Iron Spring Farm stallions as their damsire. Totilas, who many are calling the “Horse of the Century”, is by Gribaldi out of Lomika by Glendale. Glendale stood at Iron Spring Farm from 1994 until his death in 2002. Glendale is also a half-brother to ISF’s stallion Consul; they are both by Nimmerdor.
Ridden by Edward Gal, Moorlands Totilas represented the Netherlands in dressage and went home with three gold medals. In addition to the team gold medal, the pair also won the individual gold medal in the Grand Prix Special with a score of 85.70%, and also took individual gold in the Grand Prix Freestyle with a spectacular 91.80%. Totilas and Gal have taken dressage to a new level, and set record high scores nearly every time they have competed. Totilas was owned by Moorlands BV at the time of the WEG.
Iron Spring Farm’s Roemer, a USDF Hall of Fame inductee, was also the grandsire of a medal winning dressage horse at the WEG–Exquis Nadine. The elegant mare, by TCN Partout out of Charities by Roemer, together with her rider Hans Peter Minderhoud helped the Dutch team secure their gold medal with a score of 72.25% in the Grand Prix. Exquis Nadine is owned by A.M Kies.
The young Iron Spring Farm stallion Sir Sinclair may best be known for producing top dressage horses, but his seven-year-old old son Whooper was driven at the WEG by IJsbrand Chardon to two medals in the Four-In-Hand Combined Driving. As part of the Dutch team, Whooper and Chardon won the team gold, plus earned the individual silver medal with a score of 135.24. Whooper was bred by A.C.G Smits of Horst, in the Netherlands.
