The sport of eventing won’t be immune to the international economic downturn, so leaders within the U.S. Eventing Association have created a contingency plan to cut costs in the coming year. CEO Jo Whitehouse presented the association’s outline of ways to cut up to $174,296 from the budget:

To save on printing and mailing costs, the 2009 USEF Rules For Eventing will not be published in hard copy. However, the Rulebook will continue to be available online on www.usef.org and www.useventing.com, and special printings may be arranged by request.

While the first volume of the 2009 Omnibus is already in print, the spring edition will go to online-only format.

Two of the six yearly issues of the association’s magazine, Eventing USA, may be cut.

The Adequan USEA Gold Cup series will drop its intermediate division and only run at the advanced level, and the series will include fewer competitions than in previous years.

The USEA traditionally purchases airtime for a commercial during NBC’s broadcast of the Rolex Kentucky CCI****, but cutting it this year could save $10,000.

A freeze on USEA staff salaries is already set for the coming year.
