Two people suffered minor injuries and veterinarians euthanized a horse after a carriage crash on Howell Moore Road in London Grove, Pa., during the Pennsylvania Hunt Carriage Drive on Nov. 1.

According to the Chester County Daily Local News, passengers Larry and Gloria Shontz were taken to Christiana Hospital in Newark, Del., where they were later released. Driver Joe Jennings and passenger Marjorie Grafton were uninjured.

Lisa Stroud, a resident of West Grove, Pa., high-performance competitive driver and friend of Jennings, said the carriage drive passed a neighbor’s field where a bull lay in the pasture. The bull suddenly stood up as Jennings’ team went by, causing the lead horse to spook and trot up an embankment. The carriage rolled on its side as the other horses followed the lead horse up the incline.

The team of four horses then galloped off, dragging the carriage and severely injuring one horse. Stroud noted that many veterinarians and horse people attending the Pennsylvania Hunt Cup, where the carriages have an annual parade, came to help. Veterinarians humanely destroyed the severely injured horse; the other three escaped without injury.

“These aren’t inexperienced drivers,” said Stroud. “They’ve [Jennings] been practicing for months.  It was no fault of the driver, it was just an unfortunate chain of events.”

The Pennsylvania Hunt Carriage Drive, a group of about 15 carriages, has an annual parade and picnic at the hunt cup before a ride through the country and group dinner.
