HARRY G. HUBERTH

Harry G. Huberth, a passionate foxhunter and U.S. Equestrian Federation R-rated judge, died on March 22, in Pinehurst, N.C., after a brief illness. He was 88.

Mr. Huberth enlisted in the Cavalry in Fort Riley, Kan., and later served as a captain in the infantry. He was a highly decorated World War II veteran, earning the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts and the Croix de Guerre as the commanding Officer of B Company 141st Infantry Regiment.

Harry G. Huberth, a passionate foxhunter and U.S. Equestrian Federation R-rated judge, died on March 22, in Pinehurst, N.C., after a brief illness. He was 88.

Mr. Huberth enlisted in the Cavalry in Fort Riley, Kan., and later served as a captain in the infantry. He was a highly decorated World War II veteran, earning the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts and the Croix de Guerre as the commanding Officer of B Company 141st Infantry Regiment.

After the war, Mr. Huberth was invited to try out for the U.S. Equestrian Team with his jumper, Jato, for the first civilian jumping team. While he declined the offer in order to enter the family real estate business in New York, he was a successful horseman and worked with many professionals, such as George Morris, Hugh Wiley, Judy Richter and others.

Devoted to foxhunting, Mr. Huberth hunted with more than 30 different packs in the United States and Ireland. He was an honorary whipper-in to Golden’s Bridge Hounds (N.Y.), and the Fairfield County Hounds (Conn.). He was a member of Moore County (N.C.), Fairfield, Rombout (N.Y.), Middleburg (Va.), Fairfax (Va.) and Piedmont (Va.) and competed in the North American Field Hunter Championships.

He was awarded the John E. Trainor Lifetime Achievement Award at the Washington International Horse Show, was a former president of the Greenwich Riding & Trails Association, and a member of the National Steeplechase Association for more than 50 years. He retired in 1989 as Chairman of Huberth & Peters, Inc., a New York City real estate firm.

Mr. Huberth is survived by his wife of 30 years, Susan, son Harry, daughters Laurie Holden and Annie Huberth, two stepdaughters and five grandchildren.
