Green Mountain Horse Association Hit Hard By Irene

The Green Mountain Horse Association has canceled several events at the organization’s grounds in Woodstock, Vt., due to damage inflicted by Hurricane Irene. Extreme flooding caused destruction to the barns, arenas and roads of the property.

The strong rains and wind caused flooding of the nearby brooks and streams, which flowed over onto the property. Silt and mud were washed into the barns, providing a mess to clean up, but no structural damage. Jumps, porta-potties and two pedestrian bridges were also swept away.

The brand new ring, ironically called an “all-weather ring,” and a second arena were also damaged.

“We will still be able to host the trail rides and potentially reclaim the dressage show if all goes well,” said Marty Hunt, Executive Director at GMHA.

GMHA will conduct volunteer days to help with the clean up. Volunteers will work with construction crews to repair damage done to the barns and arenas. GMHA is also using this opportunity to do previously planned upgrades to its cross-country course.

Hunt said they were fortunate that no lasting damage was done to the facility.

“We lost dirt, and dirt can be replaced,” she said. “Vermont was seriously impacted; some people lost their homes. In times like these it’s wonderful how people come together to help each other.”
