In response to the controversy brought to light by the July article in the German magazine St. Georg (and discussed in the Sept. 2, p. 34, issue of the Chronicle), officials of the Federation Equestre Internationale have scheduled a conference about the practice of overbending, or rollkur, primarily used by some of the world\’s most successful dressage trainers. The conference is scheduled for Jan. 31 at the FEI headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.
According to an FEI press release, the organization\’s Veterinary Committee is reviewing the practice, which some trainers and riders believe can have negative competitive and physical effects on horses. Trainers use rollkur to develop strength and elasticity and as a warm-up exercise before riding a test.
