FEI Requests Replica Gold Medals For German Eventers

The extended controversy in the Olympic three-day event may not yet be over. The Federation Equestre International is reportedly asking the International Olympic Committee to allow Bettina Hoy and the German team to keep the gold medals that the Court of Arbitration for Sport took away from them in an Aug. 21 ruling. These medals would be replicas, awarded in addition to the gold medals won by the French team and individual Leslie Law of Great Britain.

The extended controversy in the Olympic three-day event may not yet be over. The Federation Equestre International is reportedly asking the International Olympic Committee to allow Bettina Hoy and the German team to keep the gold medals that the Court of Arbitration for Sport took away from them in an Aug. 21 ruling. These medals would be replicas, awarded in addition to the gold medals won by the French team and individual Leslie Law of Great Britain.

The FEI reportedly presented a “plea for clemency” to the International Olympic Committee. “A written plea has been submitted,” said German team official Reinhardt Weindt, as reported in Fox Sports News.

According to Deutsche Welle, a German media outlet, even if the Germans are allowed to keep their medals, it would merely be symbolic, and the French team would still be on the books as the 2004 team gold medalists, along with Law as the individual winner.
