On July 21, officials from the U.S. Equestrian Federation announced the five horse-and-rider combinations for the FEI World Equestrian Games, which will take place on Aug. 21 in Aachen, Germany.
The horses and riders are as follows:
• Kathryn Downs of Somerville, Maine, riding Pygmalion, a 10-year-old Arabian gelding, owned by Downs
• Joseph Mattingley of Scales Mound, Ill., riding SA Laribou, an 11-year-old Arabian gelding, owned by Mattingley
• Stephen Rojek of South Woodstock, Vt., riding Finch, a 10-year-old Arabian gelding, owned by Rojek
• Christoph Schork of Moab, Utah, riding Taj Rai Hasan, a 7-year-old Arabian gelding, owned by Schork
• Margaret Sleeper, DVM, of Frenchtown, N.J., riding Shyrocco Troilus, a 14-year-old half Arabian gelding, owned by Sleeper

Cheyenne XII, a 14-year-old Arabian gelding, owned by Ruth Waltenspiel and ridden by Jennifer Niehaus of Cloverdale, Calif., was named the alternate.
Twelve horses and riders were considered with two alternates based on their performance over the last two years. The final team was selected after two training events that took place in early July.
