The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship confirmed several cases of equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy, a strain of EHV-1, in Warren County on May 13. The affected horses are located in Warren County and are currently under quarantine.

Concurrently, two horses tested positive for EHV-1 in Illinois on May 8. Both horses are quarantined at their northeast Illinois barn. Multiple horses exhibited fevers the week prior. Three of those horses also showed the neurologic symptoms characteristic of EHM, and two were humanely euthanized.

Though horses from that barn attended events on April 25 and May 2, both venues have been contacted and no additional cases in the state have been reported.

All affected horses in both states are being closely monitored and no horses from their barns are allowed to leave the premises. No known connection exists between the cases in Iowa and Illinois.
