Edward E. Marshall, Jr., a lifelong horseman and foxhunter, died in Huntingdon Valley, Pa., on Jan. 21. He was 82.

As a boy, Mr. Marshall was active in many sports. He attended the William Penn Charter School, Philadelphia, Pa., where he participated in football, basketball, track, golf and baseball. In 1948 he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania where he played football all four years under the famed coach George Munger. He was then drafted by the Washington Redskins and the San Francisco 49ers, but a horseback riding injury prevented a professional football career. Golf and foxhunting then became his twin passions.

Mr. Marshall was a scratch golfer, former president of the Golf Association of Philadelphia, and he was treasurer of the U.S. Golf Association.

When he was a boy, he used to ride his horse from the family farm in Huntingdon Valley over to the Huntingdon Valley Country Club where he would play golf and then he would ride home.

Mr. Marshall’s father established the Huntingdon Valley Hunt in 1914, and Mr. Marshall hunted there as a young man. He also kept a horse with Ross Taylor, the famed southern Chester County foxhunter, and later he and his wife Jan, enjoyed hunting with Ross Taylor’s hounds.

Mr. Marshall became joint master of the Huntingdon Valley Hunt in 1957 where he served as field master until 1972. He also served as field master for the Andrews Bridge Foxhounds, then known as Mr. Jeffords’ Andrews Bridge Hounds, and for the Lewisville Hunt in Fair Hill, Md., regularly hunting two or three days a week.

For many years, the Marshalls bred and trained race horses on their farm. His blue and white silks were frequently seen at racetracks in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

Mr. Marshall is survived by his wife of 58 years, Janice Wharton Marshall; his children, Edward E. Marshall III, Steven G. Marshall, Leslee Marshall and James G. Marshall; and four grandchildren.
