Mare And Foal With Profile By Joanne Mehl
Devoted to art and horses her entire life, Joanne Mehl’s work is a tribute to the beauty and passion of the world she loves as a rider, dressage competitor and horse owner.
She graduated in 1983 with honors from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif., receiving her bachelor’s degree in fine arts in illustration. She focused much of her professional attention on portraits of horses and their owners; in 1996 she began painting full time and since then has received commissions from people across the country.

Her clients would agree the Mehl’s specialty is capturing the personalities and affinities of horse and rider. This week’s cover, Mare And Foal With Profile, is a 7″ x 10″ gouache painting of a mare and foal out in the pasture.
She was selected as the official artist for the 2007 Breeders’ Cup at Monmouth Park (N.J.). She’s currently represented by Cross Gate Gallery in Lexington, Ky.
Mehl lives in Portland, Ore., with her husband and her horse, Espresso. An avid rider, she competes in three-day eventing and dressage.
