Artist Jean Bowman was a beloved Virginia Artist who had a long and distinguished career as an equine artist of international repute.
She settled in the Middleburg, Va., area in 1944. Known as a true “horseman’s painter,” Bowman’s list of clients included many of the most
prestigious race horse owners and prominent horse people of the day. Her work is represented in the collections of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the late Paul Mellon, the National Art Museum of Sport, the National Museum of Racing and numerous private collections around the country.

In 1980 she co-founded the American Academy of Equine Art.
This week’s cover, Francis Thornton Greene On Erroldown, is an oil on canvas, 23″ x 31,” dated 1975. This painting is part of a retrospective exhibition at The Sporting Gallery, Inc. in Middleburg, Va., May 8-31. The exhibition features works by Bowman and W. Smithson Broadhead (1888-1960).
