In 1980, he moved to California to attend the Gemological Institute. After working in the San Francisco Bay area for 10 years, Tatom returned to Santa Fe, N.M., where he established a custom jewelry business, eventually expanding to Aspen, Colo., Maui, Hawaii, and Pebble Beach, Calif.
In 1994, Tatom started sculpting a series of bronze animals.
“The main focus of my work is to translate into bronze the essence of the animal, to capture some movement or instinct and present it in a simple, stylized form,” he said. “I produce only a few new sculptures a year, and I can research and think about a project for years before I start sculpting.”
