Liz Cochrane, event rider and former groom for international competitor Abigail Lufkin, is recovering from a second surgery for cancer. Her friend and fellow eventer Po Tatham, in conjunction with the Commonwealth Dressage and Combined Training Association and advanced rider Sharon White, are offering a clinic to help her offset medical expenses not covered by insurance.

In August 2004, Cochrane, of Middleburg, Va., was diagnosed with colon cancer, which had also spread to her ovaries, said Tatham. She underwent three months of chemotherapy, which kept the condition from worsening. She had a second surgery on Feb. 16, at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., to remove her spleen and gall bladder. Since that surgery is considered experimental, her insurance would not cover it, and Cochrane was left to pay $30,000.
