Bull Run Hunt Holds Onto Fox Hunters’ Challenge Cup Title

May 25, 2011 - 12:37 PM
The 7.5-mile course wound through meadows, woods, and the edges of the Catoctin Ridge.

Members of the Bull Run Hunt dominated the field during the second semi-annual Hunter Pace Challenge at Morven Park, benefiting Loudoun Therapeutic Riding (LTR) and Morven Park.

With Bull Run Hunt teams of riders finishing first in both the Masters’ Class and 1st Field levels and taking the “Crack-a-Whip,” best horn blowing, and best flask (judged on contents, of course) contests, the club was the clear all-round winner, retaining its title first earned last October during the debut event.

In all, 21 teams totaling 53 riders completed the 7.5-mile course that ran through Morven Park’s 1,000 acres of open meadows, woods, and mountain ridgeline. The course looped past the white-columned estate that was once the home of Virginia’s 55th governor, Westmoreland Davis, and ended with a race down the lush grass of the property’s steeplechase course.

Three junior-level teams also competed, with one member of the Warrenton Hunt Junior Boys, Lorenzo Solari, cranking out the most effective cry to take 1st place in the “Best Halloa” competition.

Proceeds from the event will go toward the expansion of therapeutic riding for disabled youth, adults, and returning veterans at Morven Park. For 16 years, Morven Park has hosted Loudoun Therapeutic Riding, an organization currently providing services to about 140 participants per year. LTR will begin this summer to provide equine-assisted therapies to U.S. veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Morven Park, under its newly adopted strategic plan, is expanding its offering of equestrian and educational events and programs, and plans to work alongside LTR to expand facilities and programs for therapeutic riding at Morven Park.

Following the challenge, several of the riders were joined by other equestrians to travel much the same course for the Morven Park History Trail Ride, stopping at key points to learn about the property’s history from professionally trained interpreters.

The next Fox Hunter’s Hunter Pace Challenge, again to benefit the expansion of therapeutic riding at Morven Park, is scheduled for October 16, 2011.
