Horse and Hound reports that Uthopia, one of the horses that helped Great Britain win team gold at the 2012 London Olympic Games with Carl Hester riding, will be sold at public auction on May 27.

Uthopia will be sold through Wilsons Auctions, with no reserve, and online bidding will be available.

Tom Keenan of Keenan Corporate Finance and James Neill of the NHN Group will be selling the horse thanks to their roles as trustee in the bankruptcy over two separate estates, that of Sasha Stewart and her father Derek Harrison.

This sale comes after a period of uncertainty of the horse’s ownership. The Fédération Equestre Internationale has listed Hester and Stewart as the owners since 2011, and Hester as the sole owner before that. His original registration in 2009 lists Stewart and Harrison as the owners.

The 15-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion (Metall—Odelia, Inspekteur) competed with Hester at the 2012 London Olympic Games where he helped Great Britain win team dressage gold. He and Hester also won team gold and individual silver at the 2011 FEI European Championships (the Netherlands) and team bronze at the 2013 FEI European Championships (Denmark). He competed sparingly since the 2013 Europeans with Hester’s parter Charlotte Dujardin riding.

Uthopia and Dujardin earned top placings in World Cup-qualifying Grand Prix freestyles at London Olympia and Amsterdam and were entered for the 2016 Reem Acra FEI World Cup Dressage Final (Switzerland), but Dujardin withdrew Uthopia citing ownership dispute concerns.

UPDATED 12:10 p.m., April 28: In a statement released through British Dressage, Hester said: “It’s been a distressing experience for us all and with a very unhappy end. ‘Uti’ has been part of the family for 11 years and is a yard favourite. Quite simply, I’m appalled that it’s come down to this. I’m already working hard to find backers to help me buy him and give him the very best care in retirement he deserves. I owe him so much and my immediate concern is for the horse’s welfare. I just want him home to spend the rest of his days at our yard, cared for by those who adore him.”
