Two Australian riders stood atop the podium at the FEI Eventing World Cup Final on Aug. 14, in Malmö, Sweden, but the one holding the trophy wasn\’t Andrew Hoy. It was Clayton Fredericks, whose perfectly clear show jumping round propelled him past Hoy and Pia Pantsu of Finland.
Hoy, on Mr. Pracatan, took the lead in dressage on Friday and stayed there after a faultless cross-country round. But his advantage over Pantsu, on Karuso, was a mere 1.1 penalties, with Fredericks, on Ben Along Time, another 1.6 penalties farther back. Fredericks finished Saturday\’s cross-country course 4 seconds slow, incurring those 1.6 penalties.
Britain\’s William Fox-Pitt added nothing to the 46.5 penalties he and Ballincola earned in dressage to finish fourth, just ahead of Olivia Bunn of Australia on GV Top Of The Line.

Jan Thompson and Task Force were the best U.S. pair, adding no further marks to their 56.1-penalty dressage score to finish seventh. Heidi White and Northern Spy lowered three show jumping rails, and those 12 faults dropped them from sixth to 10th. Jessica Heidemann and French Twist ended up 19th, with 6.0 cross-country time faults and 10 show jumping faults; Lauren Whitlock and Kipling finished 21st after one refusal on cross-country; and Robyn Fisher withdrew Samurai after cross-country, where they had two refusals.
Phillip Dutton rode Nova Top to ninth, adding 4 show jumping faults to his dressage score. Canadian Hawley Bennett and Livingstone finished 15th.
“At the moment I have five three-star level horses, but Ben Along Time is definitely my favorite, especially after what he did today,” said Fredericks, 37. “I\’ve had him since he was 4, and we established a special partnership from the very beginning. He is relatively mild-tempered but has a little twist, which makes him so special.”
