Sportsmans Hall’s timber horse Private Attack received The George Brown Bowl for his prowess in Maryland’s spring sanctioned timber races.
The award has been presented since 1985 to the top timber horse in the five timber races held at the My Lady’s Manor, The Maryland Grand National and the Maryland Hunt Cup meets.
Private Attack was second in the Maryland Grand National and second in the Maryland Hunt Cup for owners Julie Calhoun, Dan Calhoun III and Jeffrey Schlesinger. Private Attack is trained by Alicia Murphy and was ridden in both races by Irish jockey Mark Beecher.

“[Private Attack] jumped fantastic,” said Beecher of his Hunt Cup ride. “He was a little bit keen coming to the third. He just hit it hard, and I think that was probably the best thing that could have happened to him because after that he was brilliant.”
Past Winners include such illustrious horses as Von Csadek, Buck Jakes, Florida Law and Welter Weight.
George Brown was a Maryland sportsman of the late 1800s and early 1900s. He rode in the Maryland Hunt Cup 14 times over 28 years, winning in 1900 and 1916. He was an MFH of the Green Spring Valley Hounds and a professional steward at Maryland, Delaware and Florida racetracks.
