Equine journalist Doris Ogden Mount died May 23 in Colts Neck, N.J. She was 88.

Mrs. Mount’s love affair with horses began as a child in Summit, N.J. She graduated from Kent Place School (N.J) and Sweetbriar College (Va.) where she double majored in her two loves: English literature and equine studies.

Mrs. Mount got her start in journalism during World War II. She worked as a photographer in the public relations department of the General Motors Plant in Linden, N.J., taking photos of visiting dignitaries to boost morale. She kept her own darkroom at her home throughout her life.

After marrying Mr. Wadsworth Walton Mount in 1945, she moved to Warren, N.J., where she wrote a weekly column on equine events for Recorder Publications, owners of the Bernardsville News and the Echoes-Sentinel. Throughout her career she wrote for many publications, including The Chronicle of the Horse and Highlights For Children. In 1987 she won the Juvenile Non-Fiction competition at the State of Maine’s Writers’ Conference.

Mrs. Mount found time to share her love of horses with those around her by opening up her farm to budding riders.

Over the years she taught legions of children and adults to ride at her Somerset County farm. She was truly dedicated to inspiring good equestrians, escorting students to horse shows on the weekends and founding a 4-H club to teach children good horsemanship. Her passion for horses and good cheer inspired the many students who walked through her stable doors over the years.

She’s survived by four children: John Mount, Sausalito, Calif., William Mount, Phillipsburg, N.J., Keith Mount, Easton, Pa., and Wendy Mount-Slocombe, Long Branch, N.J., as well as three grandchildren.
