Wendy W. Newby, an Indiana-based hunter/jumper trainer and clinician, died Nov. 8 after a 11⁄2-year battle with multiple myeloma. She was 65.

Mrs. Newby, Noblesville, Ind., was born in Bronxville, N.Y., the daughter of Wes and Barbara Wright. In 1979, she married Robert M. Newby.

As a young girl, Mrs. Newby rode with George H. Morris before moving to Indiana to start her own equestrian business. Eventually, she became a partner with her daughter, Tammy Provost, at Meadow View Farm, and the pair trained many hunter, jumper and equitation riders and horses to top placings throughout the Midwest, on the winter circuits and at the East Coast fall indoor shows.

Mrs. Newby was a popular Midwest trainer who had a devoted following, and she inspired all of her students to become true horsemen and horsewomen. She was still teaching lessons three weeks before she passed away.

Mrs. Newby also had an enormous heart and rescued numerous dogs and other lonely animals over the years.

She is survived by her husband, Robert M. Newby, her daughter, Tammy Provost, and a grandson, Cole Vitello.
