Greystone McErrill, a producer of world-class sport horses, was euthanized on Jan. 29 at Triple Creek Farm in West Winfield, N.Y. He was 31.

He was bred by Marianne Alexander, at Greystone Farm in Ithaca, N.Y., in 1978 and was competed by Melanie Alexander Fuchs, Alexander’s daughter. The Connemara stallion was tall for the breed but retained all of the desirable Connemara qualities. While some were turned off by his height, others were intrigued. He was bred to many types of mares, including Thoroughbreds, and the cross resulted in many successful driving horses.

His famous sons, Greystone Dallen McMor, Greystone Ian McVai, and Thor Of Greystone, have also produced many successful competitors who are enhancing his legacy in the Connemara breed into the third generation and beyond.

Greystone McErrill’s son and full brother won the gold medal in at the 1991 World Pairs Driving Championships (Austria) with Lana Wright as whip. His daughter, Unicorn Janie, was the 1997 AHSA (now USEF) reserve national champion in driving. She was selected for the 1998 World Singles Driving Championships team (Austria).

Miles To Go (Thor Of Greystone—Unicorn Janie) competed at the advanced level in 1999, placing first at the Gladstone Driving Event (N.J.) and second at The Laurels (Pa.). His score at the Fair Hill International (Md.) qualified his whip, Kim Stover, to become the first singles driver to win the Jaguar Triple Crown of Driving.

His son, Tricreek Greystone Laughlin will compete at the advanced level in 2009. He was a multiple winner at the intermediate level in 2008, with Stover as whip.

Three of his grandsons have gone on to have careers in eventing, including Moonlight Rock N’ Roll, who won the Morven Park CCI* (Va.) in 2008 with Molly Cavanaugh.
