Caroline Martin and Sara Kozumplik Murphy are both on the mend after falling on cross-country at the Millbrook Horse Trials in Millbrook, New York, on Aug. 5.
Murphy, 39, Berryville, Virginia, and Rubens D’Ysieux fell at fence 18, a wagon, on the advanced course. They were leading going into the cross-country. The pair most recently finished eighth at the Mars Incorporated Bromont CCI*** (Canada) in June.
Murphy was transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie, New York. “Rubens” was uninjured in the fall.
Murphy wrote on her Facebook page that she suffered several fractures in her spine, some disc issues and ligament damage. She is undergoing surgery today, Aug. 6, according to her husband, Brian Murphy.

“The doctors and nurses have been taking excellent care of me in the ICU at MidHudson Regional hospital, and I’m very lucky that I received such quick and thorough help onsite at Millbrook,” she said. “Huge thanks to my husband and family, my eventing family and our incredible team at Overlook Equestrian for the thoughts and help. I am blessed. This could have been worse.”
Martin, 23, Riegelsville, Pennsylvania, was riding Cristano Z in the advanced division when they had a rotational fall at fence 4, a table.
The gelding was uninjured, and Martin was transported to the ICU at MidHudson Regional Hospital and released later that day.
“He’s totally fine and munching away on some hay in the stall right now,” said Martin. “He jogged up 100 percent sound and not one scratch on him. Thank you to Millbrook and all my support staff for taking care of me.”
