Shanghai Joe, an event horse ridden by Australia’s Shane Rose, was euthanized yesterday, May 10, after his injuries sustained during the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials (England) were deemed too serious for recovery.

Rose came off “Nugget” at fence 19 of the cross-country course. Though both horse and rider were uninjured in the actual fall, the gelding then galloped back to the stabling area. He slipped and fell there, sliding into the arches of the Badminton House, according to Rose’s Facebook page. Veterinarians determined he had a fractured shoulder.

“The suspected fracture to his shoulder was worse than expected and left him with no chance of recovery,” wrote Rose. “He was such a lovely horse; he always tried his hardest to please. Great manners and the nicest nature you could want in a horse.”

Rose owned the 11-year-old Thoroughbred gelding (Another Warrior—Zenaarena, Arena) with his wife, Niki Rose, and Lee and Bill Brydon. Shane competed him up through the levels, and Badminton was his first four-star.

“Niki and I are so proud of what our little homebred has achieved,” wrote Rose. “The hardest thing was saying goodbye to him when all he wanted to do was have a rub and a cuddle.”
