Weltino’s Magic, who won team and individual gold with Steffen Peters at the 2011 Pan American Games in Mexico, died today after complications from colic surgery. He was 14.

“Magic” and Steffen Peters’ wife and fellow Grand Prix rider, Shannon Peters, teamed up when the gelding was 5. She competed him at the Markel/USEF National Young Horse Championships (Ky.) as a 6-year-old, where he earned the reserve title, before handing over the reins to Steffen as the horse had reached more than 17.1 hands tall. 

With Steffen, the Westphalian (Weltino—Diva, Diamond Boy) owned by Jen Hlavacek was undefeated in 2011. The pair won the Prix St. Georges and Intermediaire I at the Aachen World Equestrian Festival CDIO (Germany), and then they went on to double gold in Mexico. 

“I don’t think anyone could have anticipated this year; it’s been a dream come true,” said Steffen when Magic was named the Chronicle’s 2011 Overall Horse of the Year.

In 2012, the gelding debuted with young rider Brandi Roenick, with the pair winning individual and freestyle gold at the 2012 Adequan FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships (Ky.). Roenick competed him at the small tour level in CDIs in 2013.

Shannon took over the ride again after that, moving Magic up to Grand Prix. Her student Ehren Volk started competing him in FEI Young Rider tests this year, winning at the Burbank CDI (Calif.) and Del Mar CDI (Calif.).

The gelding underwent colic surgery earlier this week, and he died from complications related to that on Nov. 3. 

“We so appreciate all the love you poured into Magic as he struggled,” wrote Hlavacek on the Weltino’s Magic Facebook page. “He passed peacefully and will always live within our hearts as a horse hero and legend.”
