Adrienne Lyle’s 2012 London Olympic Games mount, Wizard, has incurred a minor injury that will prevent him from traveling to Europe to compete next month.

The 14-year-old Oldenburg gelding was slightly off on his left front, so Lyle, 28, decided to get him checked. “We thought maybe it was a bruise. We gave it a week, and he was still a hair off, so we decided to send him for an MRI,” she said. “It revealed he has an acute bruise on his coffin bone from probably smashing his foot down, pawing, anything really. He’s kind of a rambunctious child.”

The injury will take two to three months to heal, and Wizard is continuing to walk under saddle every day to keep some fitness. “This has put a wrench in my plans. I was planning on leaving next month to go to Germany with him. He should make a 100 percent recovery from this; it just needs a little bit of time,” said Lyle. “He’d been schooling so well before, so it’s disappointing. But that’s horses. There’s never a good time for an injury.”

Lyle plans to keep Wizard (Weltmeyer—Pica, Classiker) at her winter base, Linda Fowler’s Epona Farm in Thousand Oaks, Calif., until she heads back to her home state of Idaho in April. She’s keeping busy in California with three young horses, owned by herself and Bob and Debbie McDonald, as well as with Peggy and Parry Thomas’ Dax, who’s ready to move up to Prix St. Georges.
