After the CCI** cross-country at the Adequan/FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships, Devon Brown and Dynamic Image stayed in the lead with a double-clear trip. They will show jump on 50.5 penalties. Brown, Alpharetta, Ga., was riding for Area III, currently second in the team competition. “The course was pretty challenging,” said Brown, 19. “The course was hard. Each combination kept at it, and they didn’t stop. After one you were on to the next and already thinking about how you would ride it.”
- Malibu and Joelle Baskerville, 20 and riding for Team Canada, stayed in second after adding just 2.0 time penalties to their dressage score. Kendyl Tracy and Ever So Lucky jumped a double-clear round to move up from fourth to third on 54.5 penalties. Tracy is a member of the first-placed team from Areas V and IX.
- Out of 20 starters in the CCI**, there were eight double-clear rounds. Benita Strini came off Carlingford Merlot at the first element of the first water but jumped up immediately, and four other riders had single stops at different points on the course.
- Riders pointed out the double corners at fence 17 ABC and the large drop to a skinny at fences 12 and 13 as the most difficult combinations. “I thought David [O’Connor] did a great job with the course,” said Tracy, 19. “I thought it all rode to plan. It let you get in a good rhythm early. The ditch and wall and first water were intimidating early on the course, but it made me get her in front of my leg early. I was mostly worried about the drop to chevron, but she was great there.”
- In third place in the CCI** before cross-country, Lizzie Snow’s mount Coal Creek ran off with her in between fences on course. She elected to retire.

- In the CCI*, the top of the leaderboard shifted after the cross-country. Florence Miller and Tuscan Sun suffered a fall at fence 7, a cabin headed downhill. Miller was up quickly, and Tuscan Sun was taken away in the horse ambulance. We don’t have any updates on Miller’s condition at this time. “The horse was immediately attended by veterinarians because it was lame in one front leg,” said Dr. Catherine Kohn, an attending veterinarian at the event. “A splint was applied, and the horse was transported for its comfort and safety back to the treatment center on the grounds, where it was attended by veterinarians and is now resting comfortably.”
- Sable Giesler, riding for the team from Ontario, Canada, and Evil Munchkin’s double-clear trip allowed them to move up to first in the division on 52.3 penalties. Alyssa Phillips and Sundance Bay, on the first-placed Area V team, picked up only time on course and are in second with 52.7 penalties. “I thought the course rode how I expected,” said Gielser, 16. “He came back well for all the questions. I was really happy with him.”
- There were 10 double-clear trips out of 26 starters. Madeline Sexton came off NVR Peter The Great, and Liza Igochine fell off Karla. Haley Armstrong-Laframboise and Ichabod received a technical elimination.
- After riders starting getting reports of slightly slick, hard ground at the Kentucky Horse Park, they changed their stud choices before heading out on course. “When a couple of riders slipped out there, they came back and told us where the trouble spots were,” said Phillips. “I think that helped, and my horse handled the turns fine.”
