Saturday, June 11, is 2011 International Helmet Awareness Day.

Riders4Helmets.com estimates that more than 500 retailers across the globe will participate by offering discounts on helmets. Participating manufacturers include: Charles Owen, Troxel, Tipperary, Ovation, International Riding Helmets (IRH), GPA, KEP Italia, Samshield and Pegasus

The Riders4Helmets campaign began in response to Olympic dressage rider Courtney King-Dye’s riding accident in March of 2010, when she suffered brain bleeding and remained in a coma for nearly a month after her horse fell, and King-Dye wasn’t wearing a helmet.

In 2010 more than 300 retailers in the United States and eight international retailers offered discounts on helmets on Helmet Awareness Day.

Riders4Helmets.com aims to raise awareness about the importance of wearing a helmet while on a horse, and “to get more equestrians wearing helmets…period.”
