CANTER Mid-Atlantic is celebrating a milestone year for transitioning ex-racehorses into second careers through its free online sales listings. The online sales website served nearly 150 trainers at six racetracks in 2012 who listed 350 racehorses nearing the end of their racing careers.
“It’s a huge benefit,” said Tim Tullock, trainer with horses stabled at Laurel Park Race Track, Laurel, MD. “It’s very hard to find good homes for our horses and CANTER Mid-Atlantic and its volunteers provide an invaluable service.”
In 2012, CANTER Mid-Atlantic volunteers made more than 200 trips in total to Charles Town Races & Slots and Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort in West Virginia, Pimlico Race Track in Baltimore, MD, Bowie Training Center in Bowie, MD, Laurel Park in Laurel, MD and Delaware Park in Delaware to meet with trainers and owners of horses that are ready to retire from racing but are capable of beginning a second career.“CANTER Mid-Atlantic is a 100% volunteer organization,” said CANTER-Mid Atlantic Executive Director, Allie Conrad. “Our volunteers are dedicated to helping the Thoroughbred racing community find appropriate homes for their horses when they are ready for second careers.”
During racetrack visits, CANTER volunteers meet with trainers and owners to photograph, write descriptions of their sale horses and post that content along with the trainer’s contact information on the CANTER Mid-Atlantic sales website. The CANTER sales website listings, including all chapters, receive between 35,000 and 55,000 visits each month. In 2012, the site received a total of 651,783 visits. Of those, 455,647 were returning visitors and 196,136 were new visitors. And, 142,000 visitors accessed the site through their mobile device.
