Harry, 77, was injured in a farm accident (non-horse related) on Thursday and is recovering at UVA Hospital in Charlottesville. Harry is a beloved show jumper trainer and rider who has instructed generations of riders in the US. He became well known in the late fifties when he brought along a former plow horse, Snowman, from the meat auction to win the Puissance class at Madison Square Garden. It is an amazing story: Google him for some cool photos, too (ex. jumping Snowman over another horse)

Harry won the Pegasus Award two years ago.

Send him your best for a speedy recovery.

Oh my goodness! Major Jingles from Utah. I of course read about Snowman as a child - and actually got to 'meet" Mr. Deleyer at the Attatash (sp?) horse show in New Hampshire one year. It was one of "those" moments in one's life when you finally get to meet a childhood hero (and I was far from a child at the time too! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c.../icon_razz.gif)

Get well soon Sir!

I took care of his other star, Dutch Crown, for a short while in '78 while I was at Hilltop. Harry is a great guy and always drew a lot of spectator support when he rode. Jingles, Harry.

Oh I am so sorry to hear that http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/no.gif
I have a friend that worked for Harry. I went up to look at some of his sale horses and got to meat him in person. I was thrilled to meet such a legend.
I hope he gets well soon.

Sending my best Florida jingles for Harry Deleyer! He has always been one of my utmost favorite horsemen. I dearly loved watching his rides. No one else has his style.

Jingles for Harry!
I have a copy of the movie "Snowman" thanks to the kindness of our dear departed Dublin. She sent me her precious copy to dub. I now alway think of her kindness when I think of Snowman and Mr DeLeyer.

Jingles from California. Are you sure that he's only 77. I thought he was in his late 60's in the mid-eighties. I always loved seeing him flip his hat after a good round.

Jingles from Ireland.

I met him when he won his Pegasus award - he was truly moved and truly moving!

They made a movie of Snowman?? Can you make a copy for me?? http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...icon_smile.gif We had a big (tall for the time & very wide) gray mare when I was growing up (in the 60's) that could have been Snowman's sister - and, actually might have been ! Probably came from New Holland (we got her for next to nothing from a dealer who used to get truckloads of horses from NH - word was she could jump - which she did. My very short-legged sister hunted her for years, and would get jumped off with regularity. As long as she was in a gag, she was perfect! Anyway, Snowman became on of my heros because of that mare (and because of CW Anderson's references to him in his books!)Unfortunately, while I've seen Harry ride numerous times ove the years, I missed seeing Snowman jump...

Lots and lots of jingles!!

Well, he was sixteen during WWII, so middle 70's should be about right. I thought he was older, too.

Texas-sized jingles for Mr. DeLeyer. My parents bought me the copy of "Snowman" that's sitting in my lap right now when I was eight, and HD has been my hero ever since. I also have a big grey horse that looks a lot like Snowman did. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...icon_smile.gif

Oh dear! Jingle jingle jingle.

I hope he's not too uncomfortable and recovers quickly ... I'll keep him and his family in my thoughts and prayers.

I loved him too, as a child, and I was fortunate enough a few years ago to participate in a clinic that he gave here in Jax. He was wonderful, positive, and very helpful. It was one of the best clinics I have ever attended. Many Jingles!

Jingles for a showjumping legend.

Didn't I see that he was still showing last year? If so, he's got a big head start on most people his age--or mine, for that matter.

More jingles.

I never got to see Snowman jump, but I DID see his retirement ceremony at the Garden.
