Default Water Jumps - how are they so BLUE??

How do they get the water so *blue*?! This must sound like a stupid question, but I've only ever seen murky brown water in water jumps, although some of the photos I've seen online have this wonderful turquoise color to them, it's amazing & I love looking at photos of them! What is the reasoning for this? Purely aesthetic?

Copper Sulfate in XC jumps keeps the algae down. That is a turquoise in color. Leaves no residue on horses.

For jumper courses (liver pools), I have seen tidy bowl (e.g toilet cleaner) used. Leaves a marked blue color.

We use "aquashade" and yes, it's to keep the algae down and it make the pictures purdy!: It's also used in the water hazards on golf courses.yes:

Actually....Tidybowl.
I am not kidding. They used it at the AEC's at the Carolina Horse Park water jumps.

Oh I wouldn't want to end up in that! As if it's not bad enough that you're all wet, but then you're blue as well.

Brings new meaning to being a smurf.

Horse galloping along

"gee mom says there's water coming up. Well we've gone through all those dirty brown puddles on the trail and we schooled in that dirty sandy brown flooded part of the ring, and crossed that dirty brown creek, and went through that murky brown water hazard at home.

HOLY GOD IN HEAVEN! The water is neon blue! APPLY BREAKING SYSTEM"

You said it before I could
That's exactly what happened the first time I schooled a blue water jump with my guy!

The BO dyed our usually murky water jump blue just before an event...all the horses at our barn had a really hard time with their familiar water being a different color!! Sooo funny (to those of use who weren't showing, that is!).

Blue Algae Killer Water! Beware the of the tidy bowl! If you take a swim, you will never get the blue out of your clothes. Ask me how I know?

Now, Tess will go right through it, but I took a swim at Erie a few years ago.

I was amazed at the life forms present in the water at the old Chase Creek and Long House courses, and I swear I'd do anything to not come off in that! Nor can I imagine wanting to go cross country in white breeches. That's just asking for brown or green butt stains.

Thats exactly what Kyrie said at Fitch's Corner. Thank god there was an island in there with a prelim jump on it so she leapt from bank to island back to solid ground on the other side ..... anything to avoid that awful blue abyss.

Since when is water in the Northeastern US blue? We are not doing Carribean XC. I've heard people say 'Oh, they don't care about the color" but apparently that is not universally true.

I've never jumped a blue water fence and I don't really want to start at an event. Water isn't naturally that color, why make XC water jumps like that?

I guess it goes along the course designs of "cheese wedge with mouse"?

Algae is slick stuff (walked along any ponds lately? ) and can create a layer across the top of the water. Using products to kill the algae that happen to turn the water blue or turquoise seems like more of a safety/maintenance measure than the "Cheese Wedge School of Course Design" theory.

I like the blue water. They do that at Pine Top. I think it's fun. : )
