Default WTF? Anyone near McComb, MS able to check on a possible neglect situation? post #35

I hope this doesn't qualify as an ad; I removed all the identifying info. I found this ad in the free classifieds magazine in my area:

Quote:
Donkey- Her mother stepped on her leg, breaking it just below the hock. Her owner decided to save on the vet expense. After applying duct tape and two sticks, he turned her out in a pasture. Without supervision, the bandage was too tight and cut off blood flow to the leg. After several days/weeks, it caused her leg to fall off at the break. So she is left with 3 legs, the fourth is gone from just below the hock. She gets around very well, and is learning to trust humans.

Who is the bigger idiot? The one who used too-tight duct tape and sticks, causing the leg to FALL OFF, or the one who is now selling or adopting out this 3 legged animal instead of just putting the poor thing down? Assuming these are 2 different people. And there's no mention of a prosthesis, so apparently this poor donkey is hopping around on one hind leg. Can't imagine she's had any vet care since losing the leg...what vet would sew up a stump and say, "Yup, you're good to go."

How the hell would you even get this thing to her new home? Don't turn left, because the thing will tip over in the trailer with no leg to prop it up. *headdesk*

That simply makes me want to cry.
I wish I could afford to buy the donkey, just to get it an artificial leg if that's possible and if not, to put the poor thing down.

There is no price, so I don't know if it's a giveaway or adoption or someone actually thinks they can get some money for this poor animal. It's a MS phone number, and I can't imagine putting her in a trailer for the few hours it would take to get to LA, just to have her put down. I can't afford to do that right now anyway.

It's just depressing.

i do not know where you are or what you intended to have happen but i will contribute to helping this poor animal rest.

I found the website of the rescue, but I'm not going to post it. But it's not pretty. Barbed wire and only a passing aquaintance with the English language. The donkey is not mentioned.

Someone has plans to call the rescue tomorrow for more info.

Why don't you call the humane society and get THEM to respond to the ad? Or better yet, the police or animal control? Surely there must be some cruelty laws where you live?

Well, I don't live anywhere near there. It's backwoods Mississippi. Like, real backwoods, apparently.

I'll google and see if I can locate a humane society or something, but I have a feeling that's not a very high priority around there.

I have e-mailed the person in charge of that animal collectors page to try and get more info.

I don't mind admitting that this is turning out to be waaaaaay bigger than anything I would know how to handle. So if anyone has ideas, or wants to get in on this, please feel free to jump in. 3horsemom is going to call the rescue tomorrow, but honestly, speaking just for myself, I really don't even know where to begin.

Has anyone bothered to call the authorities on any of these cases? Whether there is an active humane society, animal control or whatever, animal abuse is a CRIME, as is improper handling of animal corpses.

Oddly this place also is offering a horse for 'adoption' named "Denis", and they seem to be listed in every 'rescue' site as a bona fide rescue. Does no one check these things out? Who ARE the authorities in this area?
