It is typical of pedaphiles that they go where the children are. There are many children in our sport, threfore it will always attract those who would prey upon them.

Parents must never assume that their children are safe, at the barn or even in church. Teaching good self-esteem and good personal boundaries at home can go a long way to help children protect themselves.

A question I think nobody will ever be able to answer.

I suspect from the OP there is some indignation that "a trainer" could be involved in this activity. Well anyone who has watched the Dateline NBC To Catch a Predator series will say these sick folks exist working in every career/profession. From religious leaders to licensed professionals. Married guys, good looking guys, successful guys, charismatic guys, etc you name it.

If I'm not mistaken depending upon the State's laws rape description it could be applied to any physical actions - e.g, touching - of a minor. Not just the atypical image most people think of when they connect the word as being a blatant sexual act.

If nothing else a story like should remind parents to be always vigilant in looking out for their children.

Sad to say it, but we are particularly vulnerable in this sport. Riding is one of the few sports where someone can have little to no success and hang out a shingle as a professional and still attract clients. There is little to no certification involved in calling yourself a professional trainer. Even scarier, some of those "certified" trainers are far less qualified to teach than those not "certified". Most parents see a decent looking place, meet someone who seems to know what they are talking about, and sign their kid up. It's up to today's parents to be assertive and DEFENSIVE when putting their children in any kind of situation.

No, unfortunately there was no indignation intended because this person is a "trainer", but rather simply at those who do this kind of thing in general. Yes, I have seen the NBC show and hope they convict and contain those that are guilty, but that's another story I think!

    Default I might regret this...

I don't know Joe, and I don't know any more than what I read in the linked story. I'm not defending him against what he's being accused of. But it's just that - a very serious accusation at this stage. I'll save my energy and outrage when I see more facts.

I sincerely hope that this is a baseless accusation.

Is this the Joe Silva who is at the MSPCA?? I know Silva is not a terribly uncommon name in the Boston Metro area (I grew up there) but it would be a striking coincidence if it's not the same guy.

Glimmerglass, I'm almost certain that there is not a state out there that defines rape as anything other than sexual intercourse (w/o consent).

In this case it's "statutory rape of a child," which in Massachusetts means:
CHAPTER 265. CRIMES AGAINST THE PERSON

Chapter 265: Section 23. Rape and abuse of child

Section 23. Whoever unlawfully has sexual intercourse or unnatural sexual intercourse, and abuses a child under sixteen years of age shall...
It looks like he's being charged in two districts, both of which include statutory rape (of a child) and one that includes posing a child in the nude. I believe the article said his attorney was trying to say that all the charges stem back to when he was 20 and had a 16-year-old girlfriend. Which is decidedly NOT what the police made it sound like:
But now police say he raped several girls under the age of 16 and took pornographic pictures of many more.
"Of those images, 265 are children associated with one of the many stables that this man worked at," said Rudman.

    Default joe

Joe Silva has his own separate business called Silver Falcon Stables and leases one of the barns at Holloway Brook. I actually teach/train at Holloway.

There are stalls in the main barn available and we have been looking for another trainer to come in to fill those stalls.

Updated this morning from local paper:

--In a search of just one of Silva's 10 computer hard drives, police found 70,000 images, including 265 images of children from local farms..... In 86 images, the children were unclothed, according to prosecutors. It was not clear where the nude photographs were taken and if they included images of children from all three farms--

Sort of a bizarre question, but is this the same Joe Silva who had a chestnut with chrome gelding who had the barn name of "Turf?" I forget the horse's registered name now. Just an odd curiosity.
