My friend near Mead is putting her 28 year old mare down this afternoon due to VS in three feet at the heel, with one heel looking like it will slough off.

Plumcreek, I am so sorry for your friend and her horse.

I worry about Cody since altitude rider hasn't told me how he's doing lately. He's 26 and has been through the partial penile amputation when he was down here in the South. The old man hopefully is surviving this latest challenge.

Vesicular Stomatitis (VS) Update: 184 Colorado Quarantines
The Colorado Department of Agriculture’s State Veterinarian’s Office currently has 184 locations under quarantine after horses and cows tested positive for Vesicular Stomatitis (VS).

“The Colorado Department of Agriculture is not recommending events be cancelled; instead, we are recommending that events and livestock owners take extra caution to control flies,” said State Veterinarian, Dr. Keith Roehr. “Livestock owners should not grow weary in doing well concerning insect control. There is some evidence that fly control practices have been an effective prevention tool in this present VS outbreak.”

    County totals are:
    Adams County - 9
    Boulder County - 60
    Broomfield County - 1
    Douglas County - 1
    El Paso - 1
    Jefferson County - 7
    Larimer County - 38
    Weld County - 67

Disappointing that it's still growing, but I'm located in Douglas County and I'm glad there is still only one case. I'm so paranoid about my horse getting the virus... I practically bathe him in fly spray. We're showing this weekend and the horse park, so hopefully nothing happens there.... interesting that CHJA (for my hunter/jumper people) decided to moved Medal Finals back two months to Nov. 19-23! Good for me, as I still haven't qualified yet

Yeah, losing that 28 year old AQHA mare in such a way was a tough one for her. She raised the mare, out of a dam that was her youth show horse and lived to 34, and was the last living get of Easter King, which made her a grand-daughter of AQHA foundation sire King. So as her Facebook page says, those two mares alone gave her 62 years of joy.

On a lighter note, the reported positive near me tested negative, so the only Douglas County positive is many miles away - downstream.

Hope there are enough people showing in the medal between now and then to get you qualified, adcurtiss!

At least the news is good about Cody. I heard from Altitude Rider yesterday that Cody is doing much better. I hope all the other horses recover too. Always something. Horses are so delicate to be so big.

Hoping for quick recovery for horses So sad and unfortunate. I know quite a few who will be showing, IPEsq, so I hope I can qualify too! Of course, never at the detriment of my horse or others.

My old guy could use some jingles please. He has a few sores on his coronary band that we are trying to determine if it's this or just an injury. (Barn is already quarantined).

If anyone has good info on treating in that location or knows of a vet that has seen it on the coronary band in a sick horse in the boulder area I would love all info!

He's not showing any other signs but really didn't want to walk up the hill from his field to the barn (no temp though, feet didn't feel hot, eating fine, drinking fine etc.). I'm hoping I'm just being hyper vigilant because two months ago I would think he just did something clumsy that gave him a scrape on the front and back of his hoof.

    Thanks!

Adding that my friend's mare was noticeably lame at the beginning from the pressure of the infections.

    New update:
"As of August 25th, the total number of confirmed VS-positive premises in CO is 206. Those county breakdown is the following:

    Adams – 9 premises
    Boulder – 65 premises
    Broomfield – 1 premises
    Douglas – 1 premises
    El Paso – 1 premises
    Jefferson – 9 premises
    Larimer – 49 premises
    Weld – 71 premises

Currently 6 premises have been released – 3 in Weld Co and 3 in Boulder Co. Therefore, 200 of the VS-positive premises are still under quarantine."
Seems to me like they're starting to slow down a bit? I really hope so. 4Martini, praying for your guy that he doesn't have it! I showed this last weekend at the Horse Park and flies seemed to be almost nonexistent... here's hoping all horses stay virus free! Qualified for medals, so that's great, assuming there's enough shows to qualify for the other medal.
