Default The Sound of Music - Tonight

Anyone going to watch the new production with Carrie Underwood? I am, so that'll be one. I know that there has been a lot of kind of scornful buzz because Carrie Underwood is, after all, a Country singer, but the girl can sing. Oh, she's no Julie Andrews, but, then, who is? And, frankly, anyone would be better than Christopher Plummer as Captain von Trapp. I like the man, as an actor, but I have always thought he looked so uncomfortable in that role. So, I'll give it a chance, though I expect I will still be looking for the original movie to be shown, as it usually is, during the holiday season. After all, I can't miss Marnie Nixon singing "Climb Every Mountain."

"YOU MADE ME COOK A BUTTERBALLLLLL....and then a green bean casserooooooole....."

That's all I can think of right now when I think of Carrie Underwood. (2:20 mark on the video below)

Glad to meet a Marnie Nixon fan. Love the fact that she sang for Natalie Wood in "West Side Story" *and* Deborah Kerr in "The King and I" *and* Audrey Hepburn in "My Fair Lady."

I hate this musical and I hate the movie even more, but my life will be incomplete if I don't discover if Vampire Bill can sing.

Thanks for the reminder. I wasn't impressed with the brief preview I saw but I am a bit curious. Don't expect to like it because Carrie (?) just doesn't have the look in her eye when she sings that Julie does (that loving twinkle that tells me Maria just really loves those kids) -- it seems more like a performance than a story -- but I will try to give it a try. What time and what network, please?

I'm really looking forward to it.

And I love the fact that it's going to be performed live for television.

No Julie Andrews? No Chris Plummer? Then nope. Not watching. Have some Criminal Minds to catch up on.

I'll definitely be watching. We all have to keep in mind that this production tonight is a remake of the stage production, not a remake of the movie.

I'll stick to the movie which I own on Blu-Ray and can enjoy with my nice home theater setup.

I'm excited, mostly to see a few of my favorite Broadway performers (Audra McDonald, Christian Borle, Laura Benanti...).

I'm dvr'ing it, so I can skip the commercials haha. I've loved the movie since I was a kid, and have seen various live productions over the years too. So I'm looking forward to it!

I've seen "The Sound of Music" performed on stage in several different venues, and it was great to see it performed live. Let's face it, no one can sing like Julie Andrews, but different isn't a horrible thing, it's just different. I'm taping it since I won't be home tonight, but I hope it's great. I think it's gutsy to do it live.

I'm loving it already. I feel like it's going to be a glorious, glorious trainwreck. Carrie acts about as well as my cat.

    Observations thus far:

--This is the most ethnically diverse Austrian convent circa 1939 ever.
--"I even heard her singing in the chapel," sings a nun in the chapel.
--Without applause after a song in a musical, it makes it even more awkward when they stop and it's like, "Well, I just sang."
    "Remain relentlessly cheerful."

^ I read something about that in the last week. At one time, Austria had some sort of ocean access, so they still had a sort of leftover navy even after the country was landlocked.

I am not able to watch it tonight, but I hope it will be online tomorrow. And I hope if anything exciting happens in the live broadcast, they leave it in the replay!

Julie Andrews certainly set the bar very high, but it's not as if the musical has never been performed since the movie came out.

I do too! She doesn't have the opportunity for as many retakes as it takes to get it right, after all. There are going to be mistakes, and missed notes. It's a live performance.

The abbess said he was decorated by the Emperor--the Austro-Hungarian empire had a pretty extensive coastline on the Adriatic. Presumably for service in WWI.

I'm rather meh thus far (though I think Audra McDonald was wonderful), though my dog is intrigued by Captain Von Trapp's whistle.

I'm the total opposite--I think Carrie is a DISASTER as Maria. Her voice is too bass, harsh, and lacks any joy. Maria's character was light and a little flaky. I think her best number so far was the goatherd song. The rest, pretty much total dreck.
