Can't alter the "historic" aspect of the park. A riding academy was planned in the late '60s. That was shot down too.

They are generally only traveling the streets to and from their stables. And as some one pointed out, waiting on fares.

Gotcha - I thought they traveled through the park, but I haven't lived there since '05 so couldn't quite remember.

Here's a c&p of a comment I made on some article awhile back, in answer to the folks who are asking about stables in the Park.

JFTR: we would be onboard like crazy if it was ever offered to us, for several good reasons, but the LEAST of those reasons is safety, as we have no safety problems as an industry now.

Eva Hughes · Top Commenter · VP at Horse & Carriage Association of NYC

Laura: new “reformers” happen along every year or two, and think they are the very first to think of brilliant ideas that will ’save’ an industry that doesn’t need saving.

Just 2 years ago we were instrumental in helping to craft a pro-active bill that included upgrades in every area of our horses lives. You can read it here: http://thewhiffletreenyc.blogspot.co...nyc-horse.html.

As to Central Park, that is a perennial suggestion, and a total non-starter. Central Park is a city landmark, and every square foot of its historical integrity as an urban landscape is jealously guarded by the Central Park Conservancy, and rightly so. The Park is not just some expanse of land with grass; it is a jewel of 19th century landscaping architecture, and it is amazing that it has survived relatively intact. Hey, if the unimaginable happened and the city OFFERED us an area within the Park boundaries, we’d consider it. But the Park is only 843 acres, and much of that is water, dedicated spaces, gardens, rocky outcrops, etc. The few open spaces already have uses. Do you have ANY IDEA how large a space it would take to stable and pasture 220 draft horses, not to mention they are SHOD, so they would require individual turn outs? It’s absurd. Our horses do JUST FINE on their vacations; most horses get MONTHS at a time off. For instance, my husband has two horses, and we rotate them up from PA, 6 months at a time.

We are just regular horsemen, going about our business in a legal and humane way, who are constantly lambasted, lied about, threatened, and who have their entire way of life under constant assault from radical animal rights activists, hysterical know-nothing do-gooders, and people who think they are objective reformers. It is only a "contentious" issue because these know-nothing, agenda-driven people and their well-meaning but clueless followers CREATE an issue that doesn't exist. Our horses live solid blue collar lives, their every need and comfort attended to, are overseen by 5 city agencies, and our safety record is STELLAR -- a NYC carriage horse is statistically safer than just about ANY other horse, included those turned out at pasture. People knee-jerk a reaction and form opinions when they know very little about us. We just held our second annual ClipClopNYC, an event which brought 170 horse people and others from 10 different states to tour our stables, meet us and our horses, and become familiar with their working and living conditions. We were sponsored by the New York State Horse Council and the national horse care products company, Mane 'n Tail. We are an open book, and people who take the TIME and make the EFFORT to know us, LOVE us. Read more here: http://www.chronofhorse.com/forum/sh...84#post6911384.

Edit: This is the original article where my comment appeared - a lot of other good ones there if you want to take a look: http://newyorknatives.com/carriage-h.../#.UkR6NiQXN6I

Edit #2 - and oh yeah, there are cars allowed in the Park too, Mon-Fri.

NYCLASS has already contributed a video and their own quotes to the Gothamist story.

WHY, WHY, WHY has the driver or someone on the side of the carriage horses not reached out to them to tell their side of the story? Don't let NYCLASS beat you to the punch every time!

We just finished our press release. Our prez has been contacted by 2 news orgs for comments, but it was before we had any real info other than the horse & driver were OK.

Maybe the drivers need to put you (or whomever) on speed dial, to be called right after they ring the vet...

So you say that. Even if you know nothing else, reiterate that horse and driver are OK. They didn't have that much up there earlier, so you at least could've beat them to that punch.

Gothamist did not contact us, they never do, and it certainly is not the top outlet we think of for individual contact, although they are on our press release list.

NY1 and a few other outlets were apprised individually before we sent out our press release.

Elizabeth Forel, Steve Nislick, Ed Sayres, Tony Avella, Mary Xanthos, et al are ALL on record for saying things like "we just need one more REALLY GOOD accident."

They actively HOPE for horses and people to be hurt, to further their agenda.

Their postings are positively giddy when there is an incident - all excitement and !!!! and CAPS....they cannot get enough injured-horse porn. I posted that in a public forum a few times which I know Forel/WAR read, and since then they try very hard to keep the obvious excitement to a minimum on their FB pages.

Just remember, all this drama is because a lowlife guy wants to use the horse's stable for a parking lot. That's all. There are always "useful idiots" as Lenin called them. These idiots want them out, PETA doesn't want horses used at all...There is no coming to a meeting of the minds when someone wants you gone.

I have wondered about that, they do get all riled up and giddy whenever there is an accident with photos or video. It is almost is like porn, it gets them so excited when they see it and they crave it. Sick people.

I'd like to share some of the comments on FB, posted on the threads by the anti-carriage groups. We routinely report the violent ones; I would say 1 in 20 reported gets removed.

With the constant barrage of misinformation, exploitation of incidents, and wholesale vilification, the anti-carriage groups have made it OK to hate a group of people - namely, us.

Or it's what you call any poster that doesn't agree with your viewpoint. Wanna see horsetripping banned? You're a RARA. Horse slaughter banned? RARA. Rollkur banned? RARA. Doesn't matter if you are a horse owning/riding, pet owning poster that eats meat, wears fur, and competes your horse. If you disagree with someone PRO-slaughter/horsetripping, you're an RARA.

I never saw anyone here called a RARA for any of those things, and I am being totally honest. But I'll take your word for it.

Are there really people on COTH who are not against horsetripping?
