I recently purchased a mare and I'm trying to figure out the brand. I was told that she was a specific wb breed but I'm not going to mention which one yet as to not bias any opinions on the brand. I don't have any paperwork with her. I am curious though which breed she may be.
Thank you for any help
Clip the hair, then wet the area with water. That's how I read my horse's brand. Well, actually it appeared when he sweated. It's not as bad as trying to read a lip tattoo on and old ottb.
I have a WB book with most european brands in it. And which tells what is what on the brand.
Are there #s on or below the brand? A lot of the registries used to put part of the horse/s life # on the brand or under it for identification. Also, sometimes the brand was not that of the registry itself but was a P for premium if the foal was deemed that.
Always fun to try to "match the brand to the registry!" My WB came with his papers, but people are always trying to figure out if the brand and life # match.
We have deciphered hard to read brands by clipping, then wetting. And sometimes you can "feel" the outline - in a few cases, we have traced the outline with chalk to get a better idea of what it might be.
