    Default Why, Guys?

Why do you put the lid down?

    Not complaining, just plain curious.

I can understand putting the seat back down, but the lid too?

When visiting a guy's home, I have actually been known to put the seat back up!

    1. Dogs do not need to be drinking out of toilets if they sleep in the human bed and kiss humans.

    2. The cats fall in the toilet if the lid is up. See #1 above.

    3. It's not aesthetically appealing to view a toilet bowl when you walk into the bathroom

Plus the droplets spray all over the bathroom when you leave the lid up. Ick!

As a woman, I insist on keeping the lids down for this reason.

    yes, lid down, then flush.

but then, depending on how humid it is in your house, you may want to put the lid back up to keep mildew from growing under the lid and seat.

which no doubt falls into the "511" category....

stuff falls into the toilet....not fun having to yank the throne out to find a item lodged in the bowels you have to remove to keep it from clogging up all the time.

    What everybody else said:

Don't want my dog drinking out of the toilet (or the cat, for that matter).

Don't want the toilet to spray stuff around when I flush (and this is a proven thing).

I don't want to risk anything 'falling in' since I have a shelf of stuff over the toilet (one of those racks that fits over? I've got a little radio and all my towels and stuff and a candle up on the top shelf).

I think there's more plusses to keeping the lid closed when the toilet bowl is not in use than there are plusses to keeping it up (the only thing I can think of for leaving it up is it's a touch more convenient when you've gotta go).

Very few people I know keep the lids of their toilets down all the time. You go into the bathroom, the lid's up, the seat's down. Unless you go in after a guy's been in there. Then sometimes the seat's up, or sometimes the seat and lid are both down.

Is this what you're asking about, OP? When lids aren't customarily left down but the guys put them down? I've sometimes wondered this myself.

Have any guys responded to this thread, which seems directed towards them specifically?

Yes, this. My youngest cat is a fat nosy klutz with enough Bengal in him to make him more curious about water than he should be. He already chews my shower liner, I don't need him skinny dipping in my toilet.

I really don't like spraying fecal matter around the bathroom. Lid down, then flush. It's a sanitary thing!

Mildew grows under the lid and seat?

I live in a desert, so I've never heard of that. Yuk.

Mildew grows anywhere near the bowl, especially under the lid and seat as well as on the surface of the seat.

    not if you clean it.
Lids down. There's no reason to leave them up, and lots reasons to leave them down. In addition to not wanting to spray fecal matter all over the place every time you flush, surely I'm not the only person who has occasional clutzy moments and accidentally launches the toothbrush or the hairbrush or what have you off into space- if the toilet lid is up, guess where it lands.

All good reasons for leaving the lid down.

But how many guys have actually answered my original question? Appreciate all the replies, but the question was directed to the COTH guys.

I always leave the lid up. I don't want any extra obstacles between me and the bowl when I gotta go and time is critical.

    Thanks, Lex. I agree.

And leaving the lid up definitely keeps the mildew DOWN, as I learned one humid summer!
