I wonder why all three weren't loaded in the trailer in the first place.
Me too. I'm going to give AC the benefit of the doubt for now, but it doesn't make sense.

Or, there may not have been room.
The mules not loading in a strange trailer isn't "mule discretion" it's lack of training on the part of the owner. However, even that doesn't make sense, because if they are that bonded with the mare, they should have followed her right in.
I'm going with the thought they knew the mules would be smart enough to follow the trailer out, and if the horse were left behind, she would panic and not know what to do.
You can't see how many animals are on the trailer. It might have already been full. I don't know of too many facilities that have enough trailers to evacuate all the animals at once. It would involve multiple trips or a reliance on rescue crews. Maybe some private owners have a trailer that can hold all of their animals, but a large breeder or a trainer with many show, lesson, or training horses is unlikely to have enough slots. I also know lots of people who board and don't own a trailer at all.
