Default Dirty, dirty move Smart Pak!!

So Smartpak is running the Memorial Day sale for 10% off and free shipping over $150. Yahoo right- um, wrong... Reading the fine print it doesn't include SUPPLEMENTS or anything from 75 different manufactures that they list. So basically nothing is actually on sale. On top of that, I ordered two huge buckets of an expensive Smart brand supplement and when I checkout it told me that the discount had applied, only to get the confirmation email that it hadn't. Nice move Smartpak- have you been taking notes from Dover perhaps?

Wow, that is so un-Smartpak like. I'm really surprised. It's rare for a retailer to have supplements on sale, however, they could have just given a flat 10% off everything in your cart upon check out.

That is what I assumed it was- since that is normally what their % off sales do. I order from them literally 3-5 times a week for work and we're a huge customer. But I know it's really my fault for not clicking on the small print and we all know what ass-uming does

Doesn't surprise me a bit. They've been trending this way for a very long time and have always favored this type of advertising tactic IME.

To be fair, I think there are manufacturers that don't allow sales on their products.. VTO has restrictions on their sales now, too.

Yeah, I know there are lots of manufacturers that don't allow discounts but I kinda figured if they were having a sale that their OWN brand might just be included on it

I don't even bother with their percentage off sales any more as I always know that anything I want will be on the long list of exclusions. I shop their clearance section for deals, or buy what I really need when I need it at reg price, but that's it.

My question is, since they normally offer free shipping on orders over $75, is the free shipping on orders over $150 normal for when they have sales? I wasn't planning on buying anything so didn't bother to read the fine print.

I also don't understand the point of manufacturers not allowing discounts on their products. Hasn't Smartpak alread "bought" the items. It's not like the manufacturer is losing out. At least not directly.

Yeah, I was disappointed with the "sale" also. I was going to order a SmartPak item which I automatically get 10% off for being a SmartPak customer however the 10% Memorial Day savings weren't applicable because there was already a "discount" applied. I was disappointed but it saved me$500 I was going to spend on those brown SmartPak DeNiro boots that they had on sale.

Some manufacturers have pricing requirements that a company has to agree to if they are going to be allowed to sell that manufacturers items.

They're kind of on my crap list now since last year when I ordered the IRH elite ultra helmet from them in my usual size 7 3/8 long oval and had the 7 3/8 round shipped. They shipped out the 7 3/8 long oval and it was TIGHT. Like, chaffed my forehead tight. I returned it and wanted to order the next size up - 7 1/2 long oval which IRH manufactures but is the only size SmartPak doesn't carry in this model. Hrumph. They were going to have their purchasing department call and ask about getting the 7 1/2 long oval but no return call was had by them. Now, they carry the 7 1/2 long oval but the price has gone up $100. Ack! I don't know if I can justify paying over $300 for a helmet when they often find themselves rolling around the backseat of my truck waiting for lesson dates.

They have excluded supplements and certain brands from their sales for as long as I can remember.

That is true about certain products (like Sprenger and Rambo, especially ) but they used to discount their own supplements. I looked at their "sale" and what I needed and everything I was going to order was excluded. One of my boarders was just complaining about this very same thing yesterday. Another boarder (very inexperienced) called one of their "supplement specialists" and got taken for quite the ride. I heard rumors that the company was sold a year or two ago and I can believe it, based on the new direction that it has taken. I rarely use them anymore...much better deals elsewhere.

Well, something is going on...I got my order recently of (non"Smart") supplements and 1) I didn't get the usual email with tracking information, 2) the lids of my two supplement containers had not been taped shut as they normally are, 3) one lid was almost impossible to open because it had clearly been opened and not screwed back on straight, and 4) the seals on both containers were loose so some of the supplement had escaped from the container. While I'm not paranoid enough to think someone has deliberately adulterated the product and it will harm my horse, I do wonder WTF is going on, and thinking it's time to start some comparison shopping. Actually, I may well find that even with shipping added, the supplement I'm buying works out to be the same price if not cheaper elsewhere.

I do plan on sending them an email in case this is not supposed to be the new normal for their shipping practices.

Hmm...wonder if they used some of the contents from my containers to fill some SmartPaks....

This is so odd of Smartpak. Although, I know that reading fine print is important for any company. I kind of hold the discount stuff against the companies that don't allow them, such as Ariat.

I would definitely call them and say what your concerns are. I have never, ever gotten an argument from a representative on the phone even if a mistake was made on either end. They have always resolved the problem in my favor. Also keep in mind that if you are a USEF member, you get 5% off always, everything. And if you have a barn with smartpaks, they ship free together. Or shipping with those smartpaks, etc etc. I stay with the company for those perks and the ones I know will always be there. Plus my horse is on lease and this is the easiest way to get the supplements to her, under my control.

Definitely call! And let us know what happens

I ordered boots last year and the cart applied the discount, my confirmation email had the discount, my credit card was charged the full amount. I called and they credited me, but it makes me leary when I see a discount applied to my cart when purchasing large ticket items.

Definitely file a complaint - containers such as these should either be heavily discounted or replaced by the company at no charge.

Along those same lines with a different company... Horseloverz.com is/was having a "great" Memorial Day sale. I was about $100 in to developing a $150 order so I could get free shipping, when I noticed that there were extra shipping items charged. I didn't think I'd ordered anything particularly heavy... and I looked to see what their charge was for... on their BOGO leather halters... $1.80 each for extra shipping... last time I checked a cob sized halter weighed next to nothing. The failed to even respond to my inquiry. Needless to say... the sneaky extra $3.60 made their "deal" less attractive and I decided that I really didn't need to place an order with them.

Yes, the manufacturer can stipulate that retailers can't offer discounts on their products, or specify a minimum price that can be charged for an item. This case actually went to the US Supreme Court (Brighton vs. a small gift shop here in the Dallas Fort Worth area) and Brighton won.

Ariat, for instance, will only allow retailers to discount a certain amount unless the item has been discontinued. So don't blame SmartPak.

Sadly, there are many manufacturer restrictions on pricing and allowed discounts. My friend started working at a local tack shop with a large online presence and I've become more aware of how serious these restrictions are. I inquired about them price matching a Charles Owen helmet I found for much cheaper elsewhere and instead of getting a discount, they reported the company for selling at an "illegal" price. Within a couple days, that shop had adjusted their price

Keeping a business that runs promotions and has offers such as free shipping afloat is EXPENSIVE. I think that SmartPak has done an excellent job of providing services that set them apart from the competition, such as free returns on all sized items, and providing excellent customer service along with a good product assortment.
