    Default Weird bird sound in the night????? What makes a sound like..

    ...it sounds like a cross between a car alarm and a ... whippoorwill or something, but it's LOUD and I only hear it after dark.... It wakes me up

    Any ideas???

    GOSH! THat's frightening, but that's not it. It's not that harsh, thank goodness! But it's loud and annoying I might add

    Screech Owl!

    They don't "hoot."

    They sound kind of like a horse's whinny.

    Whooping cranes?

    I swear there's something like a whooping crane nearby (maybe in the same family) that I hear in the middle of the night--sounds like a bird laughing. One year they were close enough and loud enough to wake me up regularly. In the past years, I barely hear them, so they must have moved.

    I've never been able to find a sound file online that matches what I've heard, so not sure exactly what it is.

    I'd say a mockingbird. I have one that wakes me up at night, especially when the moon is bright.
