Default Dystocia Vent Pics Added Post 30

Had one of our worst dystocias last night with a clients mare. Water broke, mare starts pushing, little progress, check position and feel ears!!! The harder we tried to push baby back the harder the mare pushed. All 4 legs were tangled together, could feel hocks, ankles & poll. Finally after 4 hours, 2 vets and a tractor we were able to deliver a huge colt, did aggressive CPR but no luck.
Mare then prolapsed uterus. Right now the mare is holding her own. I feel battered & bruised and just needed to vent. RIP little boy

A little update. Mare is surprisingly bright and hungry. Still has not passed placenta. She just had a Gentocin flush and are starting low doses of oxytocin. Giving IV Gentocin & IM Penicillin twice a day and Banamine around the clock to hopefully ward off laminitis. Uterus actually feels pretty good considering all the trauma. Thanks for all the good thoughts and jingles.

So sad for the loss of the foal and hope that the mare continues improving. Try to keep a positive attitude as breeding horses gives you the highest highs and the lowest lows.

We have convinced the owners to take the mare to New Bolton. She is still pushing too hard.

Major jingles. Crappy year for a lot of us. I hope the mare pulls through.
