My neighbor and I share "custody" of a beautiful siamese stray. We both feed her and she hasn't left. Yet she still hunts like nobody's business. We found out that three of us (me, neighbor, and neighbors FIL who lives across the street) were feeding the cat 1-2X a day and the cat was still bringing me dead mice/rats.
And her favorite place to sleep is on top of my 5-bale-tall hay stacks. So I think you could put food up there for it, and it may be a favorite place to hang out.
Put dry food out during the day in the barn, take it in at night. Leave water all the time. Kitty will learn to come during the day and she'll stay. Not too many really loathsome creatures will come into the barn during daylight hours for the food.
Learn from my Fail:
I had it out with a good-sized raccoon last night.
Him vs. Me w/pitchfork.
If the $%^#! hadn't scrambled up into the rafters I'd have forked him.
As it was, I had to wait him out until he thought it was safe to crawl down, then I "helped" him out the door.
This with me & both barncats in the barn & lights on @ 9P
I've also surprised possums when I flip on the lights at nightcheck & cleaned up scat from both species of varmint.
Thankfully not on my baled hay.
Ugh besides the fear of EPM.
As of tonight No More Catfood Out At Night E-V-E-R!
