Default What helmet are you wearing for dressage shows?

Yeah I know - who the hell cares, just slap it on and ride.

But darn it, it's been ten years since I got a new show helmet, and there's a lot more options this time around. I'm going to go ahead and overthink it .

I was planning on replacing my black velvet helmet with another black velvet helmet, but now am wondering about the more 'techy' looking helmets out there. What do you compete in? What are your thoughts on the different looks?

Not a fan of the velvet helmet look. Nor do I like shiny helmets.

I have a CO AYR8 in black/black. I do like the matte appearance and it fits my oval head perfectly. I also show hunters, so works in both rings. I don't get overly hot in it.

The Troxel Reliance is nice looking if that fits.

Depending on how much you want to spend....

I am in love with the Samshield helmets. I'm saving up for the Swarovski basic for a show only helmet. Cuz for nearly $900 it won't be leaving its cover except for special occassions.

Otherwise GPA helmets are amazing and well worth every cent.

I used to have a GPA but it gave me a wicked headache (pressure on the forehead) after 4-5 horses. Last fall it was hitting the expiration date, so I shopped around and ended up with a One K Defender. Love, love, love this helmet!!!

Several of our friends and students have upgraded from their CO, IRH and GPA's as their budget allows. The big selling point - the removable/washable liner. No more stinky hat on hot summer days!

I'm currently riding my battered old event helmet but I need to purchase a show-quality helmet soon - it will be my first time competing under the new helmet rules this year. I've been looking at the CO h2000sq because I like the traditional styling: http://www.charlesowen.co.uk/gb/products/h2000sq
But I'm also intrigued by the new Patey Corne, though I suspect it's out of my price range! http://www.pateyhats.com/hats/patey-corne-riding-hat/

I can't wear show helmets because of my neck damage. The weight of it puts pressure in bad places.
I show in either my ovation or my Tipperary helmet. I just wipe it down with a damp cloth and off I go!

UVEX helmets are great and you can now get them in the US. Dressage Extensions carries them.

The high-end Tipperary. I love the ventilated helmets -- SO much more comfortable than the old velvet-covered HOT brain buckets.

I'm a big fan of the IRH Elite helmets. I started wearing them because they come in Long Oval, so they fit my oval head. I've worn the black matte plastic one the Elite Extreme for a couple of years. Last year during the Helmet Awareness Day sales I bought the Elite EQ, which is suede covered, in navy. I love the look of that helmet. Goes awesome with a suede collared coat.

I just bought this one last year to replace the old velvet helmet...

    http://www.smartpakequine.com/irh-at...x?cm_vc=Search

It also comes in a long oval, super comfy for me and ventilated. It comes in black, navy or with a charcoal skunk stripe (which I got)

You can find it for about $150 if you shop around...

I have a KEP and a Casco - both are very nice and lightweight and breathable.
I would also be interested in a Uvex.

I also find that heavy helmets cause my neck problems, so I have to have a very light helmet. Both my KEP and Casco weight little more than a baseball cap.

    Good luck!

Another vote for OneK. Many finish options, and I sometimes forget I am wearing it.

I wear a Charles Owen JR8. I don't find that it gets too hot, but I know a few people who have complained of that...

If I was buying one right now and had the budget, I would get a Samshield for sure. They look great and the one I tried was super comfortable.

I have 3 helmets that I like, but the One K is my favorite out of the CO Ayr8 and Samshield.

My one k is the most favorite helmet I've ever owned. They also have a crystlal version available for about half the cost of a samshield.

Oh be still my former-HP heart, an approved Patey?!? Though sadly not ASTM, just European.

Anyway, I'm just doing GMO stuff, not recognized, but I just replaced my GR8 with a JR8. I find both of them quite comfortable.

Same. Does not fit as comfy as my original Tipperary sportage, but not bad. Its hotter too, but anything is going to be that is not vented.
