"Isn't Santa Anita supposed to be closing soon as well?"
Really ? ? ?
I think the short answer is now, no. When I wrote that, I was thinking of talk in the news about redevelopment, but that has changed. According to BloodHorse,
Santa Anita is not under threat of redevelopment at the present time, but there was concern about the track's future when its previous owner, Stronach-chaired Magna Entertainment Corp., was undergoing bankruptcy.
One factor that is preventing re-development of the race park is that someone has nominated the barns to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places (I think I got that right), but as far as I can find, the process has not been completed. I looked at the government website and it's not there. I could be mistaken, my internet search skills are limited to the amount of energy I want to put into something and that is as far as I got. The reason for the nomination is that the barns were used as a Japanese Internment camp in WWII.
Part of the grounds (parking lot) has been peeled off to put up a medical building which is being built now. The process of taking bits at a time is concerning to those who want to keep it a race track.
While I am not a fan of Hollywood, bad location, grandstand is terrible, traffic terrible, service - dining and whatnot, practically terrible - it is the best surface to train on of all the California tracks, and bet on, horses run truest to form there..mixed feelings about it's closure
I have sort of been wondering about TVG as well. I know they are tied to HP, and I was wondering with Ray Paulick and Matt's Friday morning show Blinkers Off being shuttered earlier this year. And I have noticed, on the Dish they have been bollixing up the channels. It used to be TVG and HRTV were side by side. Now they are moving TVG down to 399. Not a big deal, but sometimes they move a channel then take it off entirely. If they lose HP, what will they have that HR doesn't? The track in Canada can migrate back, and HR can surely pick up Keeneland.
And excuse my ignorance, but if Stronach doesn't own SA, who does?
Horse racing in CA has been struggling for a quite a time now. Indian casinos everywhere, high taxes, worker's comp, and many of the tracks sitting on real estate that is worth bazillions...it's not a recipe for longevity.
I still can't believe Bay Meadows has been closed for 5 years. I used to go there as a little kid with my dad, pore over the DRF and eat greasy food and make him bet on the horse's whose manes were braided A lot of people thought my dad was a degenerate for taking me to the track!
GGF isn't far behind. I spent more time there as a kid. So many memories. I can still smell the sweet mustiness of the racetrack from the track apron. I remember sitting up in the stands on Laffit Pincay day, and watching a big beautiful grey horse he was riding flip over the inside rail at the start of a race and send him down hard. For a split second I thought he had gotten killed riding at a cheap track, on his tribute day. A year later I owned that horse!
So many memories.
As Peter, Paul, and Mary say, a dragon lives forever.
Breaks my heart to see it go. My first homebreds only win was there. He adored the surface. California was a pioneer for safety in mandating the poly tracks but I fear that was part of its demise. The industry here in ky is struggling hard as well. I remember Arlington park closing and. Then being ecstatic to hear of its reopening better than ever. Very quickly we are losing our history.
Isn't Native Dancer one of those buried at the park ?
Native Diver, not Native Dancer.
DirecTV hasn't done anything with TVG, and the website's happily tooling along. I think it's good to remember, TVG's main purpose is wagering and their big revenue stream is the players, who sometimes watch, sometimes not--honestly, I just won $123 on a pick 3 today I didn't even watch. It's not so much "televising horse racing" as a focus as "simulcasting in the comfort of your living room." I work for a casino and I don't see why anyone goes OUT to gamble when they could stay at home in their PJs and make better money at it...HRTV, I don't know, I haven't seen it since my parents got fed up with Dish and switched and I don't miss it (never even considered Dish here.)
