Default Need a Podhajsky Book Recommendation, Please

My new non-horsey friend and I watched the PBS program about the Spanish Riding School this week and I came home all excited about checking out a copy of My Horses, My Teachers from the local library for us both to read. Cannot believe that not a single library in the county system has a copy!

They do have My Dancing White Horses and The White Stallions of Vienna and a few of Podhajsky's other books.

Which one should I try to get? The local branch library doesn't have a single one, so I will have to put in a request, and hopefully the book would be in by next week when I get to go the library again.

Which book would you recommend for a non-horsey reader to enjoy as a further intro to the school and the horses? I would even check out Marguerite Henry's White Stallion of Lipizza--I love children's books--if it will do.

There is supposed to be a Lipizzaner barn somewhere in the Atlanta area. Anyone know anything about it? Would a visit be a good follow-up to the PBS program?

(I was seriously disappointed the program did not include captions naming each movement the stallions did, but was glad they talked so much about the mares.)

    He had an interesting style.

There was a book series by an Austrian author who wrote a lot about horses, but I don' think his books ever got translated into English

For a non horsey, I'd definitely try My Horses, My Teachers (have you checked ABEbooks.com?), but if not that, my Dancing White Horses is pretty good and more narrative. Complete Training is great but is not nonhorsey level.

My Horses, My Teachers is on ABEbooks for $2 something. It's under $7 even with shipping from UK.

this one tells a lot about training too, but in a conversational way

complete training is a text book that can be dry and that you think is simple, but each time you read it you realize it says more, and when you ride grand prix and read it again, you think, how did i miss all that the first time. honest. it has hidden messages

Not a book, but if you can find online or a copy of the Disney video or DVD 'Miracle of the White Stallions' I think they would enjoy that, too.

Second My Horses, My Teachers book if you can find that one.

Thank you all very much! I, too, was thinking of trying to get a copy of Miracle of the White Stallions. Had a copy before I moved out of my house over a year ago ... I *knew* I should have brought it with me!

Last year I made everyone at my Thanksgiving dinner watch Miracle of the White Stallions. I almost cry when they do the show for Patton. It also has Eddie Albert in it. How can you go wrong???

    Here ya go: http://lipizzan.org/store.html#DVDs

I strongly recommend "The Spanish Riding School of Vienna". It's much better than the program that aired the other evening, even if it's 20+ years old.

I thought OP was asking for a book non-horsy friend might enjoy.
This is so not that book.

I've only read this and My Horses My teachers so can't comment on the others.
